This is a WIP that I work on my rare free time, these last days I was playing with the texture.

This is my first post in this Forum, Iīm very often here browsing and looking for 3d art, and iīm proud to finally be a part of it.

Thanx guys, well I've spent some good time on the textures indeed. But the first texture that i did for him (this one http://www.3dluvr.com/holzmeister/wip/trex_wip4.jpg
) I had spent 2 hours in photoshop with a wacom graphire tablet, to do both color and bump. Very fast for me, but after that sometimes i get back to it and add more detail. The color one i changed a lot. The lighting in not yet good, far from it, but this render is just a wip, so nevermind that.

Hey guys critic and coment at will!

I like the textures you put together quite a bit. I'd like to hear more about how you created your shaders/materials inside the program as well, if you care to share.

Whatīs up Obisidian, no prob to share my friend... Actually this is a very basic shader. I use 3Dsmax 4.2, this is a phong material, with planar mapping coordinates using some blends, there is a color map, a bump map, and specular and glossines map.

Well here is a brand new render:

waiting for some critics

HI,
good model....but I prefer this head shape....your shape is more roundness...more spherical....

See the DinoPedia at

great work!

Great work! How did you get that translucent look on the jaw aductor muscles (I think that's what they're called...those flaps on either side of the jaw)?

The only major crit is it looks too much like the Jurassic Park T-rex as opposed to a, well, REAL one...

[i]The only major crit is it looks too much like the Jurassic Park T-rex as opposed to a, well, REAL one... [/B]

Eh... nobody's ever seen a REAL T-rex... any theories on what they looked like are, well, theories. Based on observation of other species and educated guesses. For all we know, the T-Rex had feathers...

Although, I agree, it looks somewhat cartoonish at this point.

Thanx for your comments,
CutnPaste > indeed... i like that one most to, its a shame that i did not find that reference when i started, but a did some geometry changes to mine today tha made an aproach... it will not get closer to that one you sent couse I dont wanna change the textures too much, so i cant change the model radically. Thanx for the good reference!
Bobzilla > Well I never seen a more real one than Jurassic park's one, Actually I guess they did much more deep research than me, so thats why I used their's as reference... but, well do you have any reference that shows the real look of it? Actually i decided to make mine much more stronger (bigger muscles) than Spilbergīs.
Sledgeweb > i guess the cartoonish like of it is more about the composition colors than the model itself, but I agree that he looks just not as real as I would like, so i have changed a bit.
I realized that my T-rex needs some more geometry on it, so here we go:

Here is a low poly wireframe

And here is a smoothed viewport shot

Critics and comments are very welcome.

And: Didn't mean to be so critical of the reference you chose. It seems everyone who does a T-rex uses the JP one as reference...

Great texture work. I like the randomness of it yet there are places where the "lumps and bumps" are in just the right places.

Do you plan on animating it?

If I get the nerve up, I'll post the allosaurus I've been working on...

Don't forget the opening for hearing. It's posterior to the eye and high on the skull; I don't have a reference to point you to at the moment, though.

Looking nice.

ANIMATION AVAILABLE!!!

well, thanx for your comments, and for you that followed this topic, it's time to see it alive... heheheh well the rig is not done at all but it's enought to feed my anxiety to see it moving... i'll fix many problems as time gets available... but for now you guys can se this preview... http://www.krio.com.br/andre/rugido_test.avi
its using microsoft mpeg4 codec

I agree that he's a little cartoony looking, but I think it's cool that way. A good parallel would be the sharks in Finding Nemo. Cartoony looking...yes, but still mean and nasty looking as well.

Thanks for the description of the shader. The only thing I am not clear on is how you blend between various planar mappings. Texture mapping isn't my strong suit, so I'm curious as to the details.

Hi obsidian,

Thanx for your commnets, well about that blending stuff ther is a very cool tutorial about that in Antropus site... www.antropus.com

very nice T-Rex. maybe a bit more work on the eyes is needed to increase the realism :)
offtopic: antropus.com's guy uses maya for rendering? impressive looking ( http://www.antropus.com/senzaazione/videos/plumber001.avi )

I'd love to see the animation, but when I click on the link I get a blank movie. I'm on Mac OS 10.2.6 with Quicktime 6.3.

bobzilla, the codec is microsoft mpeg4 , i guess this does not work on mac, sorry.
Tetsuo, yeah the ey needs more work... get smaller and the texture will change i guess.
cutnpaste & greenlee - thanx guys...

well well, another update

How do you prevent the calf muscle from interscting the thigh muscle? I'm having a heck of a time trying to prevent that in my dino.

amazing realism! but each time I see those crature, I never beleive that the front paws could be so tiny. I just make the whole creature seems unbalanced. But I guess it's like they are depicted most of the time.

I love the texture and the way you integrated it into a natural scene.

nah :p TRex's arms were ridiculous hehe its arms were even smaller :D

thing I dont like is the texture on the bottom of its tail and I think the textures on its head are a bit sharpen
i really like the textures on the legs, the neck and back of the head

BTW: all brazillian peeps likes tyrannosaurus rex? I say it because of this pic --> http://www.discreet.com/images/products/3dsmax/3dsmax5_beta/hi-res/3dsmax5beta_image29.jpg from www.seagullsfly.art.br
