View Full Version : Character: New Face
kungfudork 09-03-2003, 11:35 PM here is a new head i started working on yesterday. the inspiration came from JTalbotski mentioning on the hash list that he doesn't use rotoscopes, just lots of references, so i figured i would give it a shot. i always seem to spend too much time trying to draw a great reference, when my drawing really isn't up to par and i get too frustrated. so here is a "freehand" modeled head. no references, just started with the lips and moved on from there.

i hope to update this on a daily basis. let me hear your comments. tear it apart! thanks!

I like it, it reminds me of beastboy a bit, good job!

Hey Deiter,
Looks very good. I believe building a model "freehand" just naturally adds a lot of character, which your model has, and keeps the model from being too lifeless.
Sort of like tracing a photo will never have as much life in a drawing as when you sketch something freehand.

That is also the way I model. I think I tried to use a rotoscope once before and it just didn't turn out that well. Every once in a while though I will use a side view of something.
Great work on this one so far. It remonds me alot of some of my characters.

looks great! has character but I tend not to work freehand. Proves there's more'n one way to skin a cat!

Looks real nice. He has a lot of charater with a good 3D sense of proportion (I like the way that the mouth comes right round the side of the jaw). Fast modeling too!
It might be a good idea to whack some eyeballs in there. This can often lead to one having to change this and that to suit and is worth doing earlier rather than later.
There is some nice characterfull creasing around the mouth. Maybe you could add some under the eye too?

This guy looks great to me. Is there anyway you could post a mesh? I am still learning to model and I love to see how others do their thing. Is the ear a seperate mesh?

i added eyes and a new ear. the new ear is supposed to be more realistic, i followed colin freeman's tutorials. i'm not sure if i like the new one or not.........let me know what you all think. there is also a mesh posted from a screen capture, i can't seem to get A:M to render in anything other than final.....oh well.

I like the original ear better. For me, the new one seems too detailed for a cartoon-like character, and draws attention away from the character's face.

Looks like a good, clean mesh. I notice that you are using a three poiner on the head. I have started doing that in AM10.5 too. I is a good way to avoid the "nipple" effect that you get trying to end geometry with spline rings.
Here is me being REALY picky:
I think that I would prefer it if the ears were attached to the head. This would obviously mean that you would have to add extra geometry to the side of the head there but maybe that wouldn't ba a bad thing as it would mean that you could define the cheek area more. You could also use the spline that ends in a hook above the ear.
You have a couple of hooks running sideways off the nose there (this is often un-avoidable even with a nose as spline-efficient as yours). Maybe you should have the top hook as the one that runs all the way to the corner of the mouth. This would help define that smile line.
Looking at the eyes, I would pull the cps at the corners together a bit so as to make the corner sharper (think about what is going to happen when he blinks). You want a nice, even disribution allong the top and bottom of the eye to make the lines nice and smooth ( if that is what you want).
All in all a great model though. I am looking forward to seeing more. I wander what colour he is?

thanks for the comments! i am gonna stick with the less detailed ear, and i definitely want to attach it to the head mesh. as far as color, i've been playing around with that too. can't really decide....blue, green, grey.....i don't know. i hope to have an update soon.

ok. so here is a color version. i tried to use a fractel sum combiner to make freckles. i kinda want him to be sort of a "my buddy" character......i know some of you remember those. i want him to be sort of a cute/sinister character.....i think?

The ears look a little "stuck on" at the moment. . .
I like the big eyes and the overall style but it is looking a little "Hastastic" at the moment with all the lumpy spline things going on. (I love that word. . . Hashtastic ).
Good start. . .

thanks wegg. i agree, he still needs some push-n-pullin....so he doesn't look so "hashtastic" (hahahhaha). i figure that'll take some time.....so i've sidetracked to other things so i don't get burnt out on trying to make him perfectly smooth.
the ears are stuck on for the moment, cause i'm not sure if he'll have hair or something on his head. basically i'm lazy and if i can hide the "stuck-on-ness" of the ears without remodeling then so be it.

ok, so i started to work on the body. it needs alot of work but i thought i would show it anyway. all comments welcome.
a funny story(or sad, however you take it): i was inspired by jim talbot to start this character and was feeling good about it, and now thanks once again to jim i am feeling discouraged....hahahahaha. his modeling work is really fantastic. check it out in the WIP thread.HERE (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=52087&perpage=15&pagenumber=17)

KungFu -
Nicely done. He has alot of personality. Now can you tame those eyes down a bit - they scare me. :)
I think the choice of clothes is so funny with this head. Can't wait to see where he/she/it goes.

well i decided to take a break from my "8th Dwarf" model and work on "my buddy" again. so i made him some hands and started messing around with the hair in v11. here are the results, let me know what you think. thanks!
(there is some type of material or group problem on the face, i'll fix that next go round)
