ill_logic 05-22-2002, 03:39 AM hello all,
my name is jared, i'm currently a student in the digital arts, & this is my very first posting. below is an image i created for a comic concept i've been toying with for years. before i try to model this in 3d, are there any suggestions/comments/crits? and just because i'm new doesn't mean you should by any means hold back! lol go ahead, unleash!
thanks in advance,
:surprised - jared

yeah, i was thinking the same thing... any suggestions about how to make it just look a little scruffy in that area & not a full grown in goatee? aside from stipling in some five o' clock shadow around the chin area

Very Nice! Are you going for high or low poly when you model? What program are you going to use? Is this going to be for an animation or just 3D stills?
Nice work! Post the 3D when you get started!

I think the 5 o'clock shadow thing might be your best bet... unless you want him to have that scraggly, pre-pubescent, thin-haired, and sparsely-populated type of goatee.
...which you may like.
anyway, this is just my two cents
this is the link if the image doesn't work:

hey, thanks!
that black whisker stub version looks great. that's a bit more like i was going for. i'll try to give him something like that. thanks!
aside from a funky goatee, how do the characters look from a design stand point. i know you really don't see much of them.
as of right now, i only wanted to try & redo this picture as a still, but would like to eventually have these characters animated so i might rig them somewhere along the way. as far as what we've learned so far, i only know object modeling, shading, lighting, texturing, & how to use the keyframe slider in maya, which btw, is the program i'll probably use to do all this. any helpful tutorials anyone can reccommend for basic character rigging?

I really dig the blonde chick
It looks to me like you're going for a kind of "futuristic/high-tech youth in the riptide" type of thing...
Ever seen Cowboy Bebop?
As for rigging in Maya... I can't help you out there - I'm just starting with maya myself!
good luck to you
cheers
and what's this about PUBES? Did my post spark that?

since you said to let them fly... I just think it looks too much like 'Captain Planet' the characters look too nice, like in an 80's cartoon, which brings me to my next point... the clothes, man... the yellow jacket is definitely too 'Micheal Jackson' heh,heh
Nice work no doubt, but the pic just lacks some flavor

wow...
you're not the first call it such. my friend refered to it once as a 'captain planet on mescaline.' i still don't know if that's a good or bad thing, to be honest, but he called it that since the characters are elemental (sans silly little power rings & spider monkey). but i've never been told it lacked flavor.
the real sources of inspiration was a combination of the first two ps final fantasies, music videos, musashi's book of the five rings, hk action films, & watching a lot of crazy british travel shows on cable. i'm a huge fan of bebop (certainly my favorite anime series) but it's a bit different. the goal was to have something 'ad&d' fantasy-like & make it a little semi-futuristic.
maybe the flavor lacking is because this is such a calm picture... & i the bottom do anything for you? it's one of several action pics i have in the works. if not i guess it's back to the drawing board! lol
oh yeah... & yeah that yellow coat sucks, i don't have a set look for that guy yet. and what's so wrong with michael jackson anyhow?! :buttrock: j/k lol

LOL, interesting.... seeing what they are going to do (kick some major ass:buttrock: ) makes me look at them differently.... they don't look too nice any more, hehheh
I'm all for ridiculous gore, like in say.. Ninja Scroll, as long as it isn't too distasteful ... I took a Sci-Fi Horror Film class and, maaaan, there is some nasty stuff. I like action gore much better.
The only thing I'm wondering about is the style in general.. almost especially now that they are tearin' it up......
I had a few comics when I was a kid, but I'll never forget the day I picked up the 1 Spawn at the store, the colors were so vibrant and contrasting, it made reading others seem a tad weaker. its been ages now and I don't know much about what's going on there so totally my opinion only.
as for action cartoons/ comics I think anime is where its at, I'd like to see yours have a bit of that flavor while staying with your originality as well.
ah, but who knows, I'm just a golgi in a velvet sea
