I already have a Engineering degree and recently realized that my interest lies in animation/modelling! (not sure of specialization yet.. but something with 3D models and their animation.. still need more experimentation).
So I am working right now and don't have much to do in evening or weekends. Is it possible to get really really good without any formal education? Well, I am sure it's possible, but how long do you think will be difference in time?
ps. i am currently playing around with 3ds max
Thanks

Of course it is possible! With your engineering background I would think that you can easily learn modeling. Just research for good books, buy a few and jump in. There's also a wealth of tutorials online that you can use. Self learning needs a strong discipline though, because there are no deadlines like in a real school environment so you'll have to be dedicated.

Animation however, is another story, from my own experience, it takes at least a year for someone with talent to be able to master the basics. It's also more difficult to learn on your own because a good part of learning animation is getting your work reviewed by a good animator and getting feedback. But it is possible to search online and find someone who would agree to give you critique.

As for how long it would take, for modeling I would guess it takes a dedicated person about 8 months to get good and another 8 months to get really good.

For Animation, it would take a year to learn the principals, another year to become good enough to be able to get an entry level job in a studio.

good luck
