hi, im thinking of buying a laptop to be used (for practice) for maya and photoshop. would an Nvdia geforce GT 230M be enough.

btw, is there a significant difference between an i5 and an i7 processor for running maya?

A laptop is not what you want for Maya and Photoshop. Desktops will perform much better for the same money. If you must get a laptop, that video chipset is probably sufficient performance wise though it'll have some artifacts and missing elements in Maya. I'm not up to date on mobile processors but you're looking for the highest clock speed you can get with as many cores as you can get within the budget. Cheers!

btw, what kind of missing elements?

hi, ive got another question: which is better, a machine with a higher processor or one with a better graphics card?

choosing between HP Pavilion with i7 720QM and a Geforce GT 230M or Gateway P79 with Core 2 Quad Q9000 and a Geforce GTX 260M?

Both! Given the choice between the two I'd take the Core i7 720QM. By missing elements I mean the sculpt tools won't show up right, paint tools crash or don't show up, some ramps in the UI will be corrupted or blank, all the usual stuff that comes with using a gaming card in Maya. Cheers!

CPU for rendering, GPU for working within Maya to display all the verts. Also, I've notice that laptops are frustratingly buggy (and I'm an IT guy who has to fix said problems) when it comes to working on 3D apps or anything in general. I can't tell you how many times I had to bark at an HP/Dell tech because their Precision/whatever laptop wouldn't quit throwing stupid errors that led to a complete replacement of motherboard (often not even fixing the problem).

You'll be alot happier with a powerful desktop machine.

@The4thAggie
yup, a desktop would be nice but im after portablility at the moment.

@olson
yup, would be nice to have both high processor and high gfx card but my budget is only $2.2k. the ones with that kind of spec are usually $3k+. :sad:

right now im more inclined to get the HP one :)

Think they would ship to you?

Add some more memory and you've got a pretty sweet setup for less than $1500. Cheers!

They won't ship to him. And if he had some one circumvent it manually it would be a custom's nightmare and a massive tax liability.

Thanks for the suggestion olson but im afraid Jettatore's right. just checked newegg and they only deliver to locations within the US and Puerto Rico.

would have been a nice deal though.
