I am running a AMD 9950 Quad at stock speeds of 2.6 ghz.
Idle it runs at 47c but when I'm doing 3D rendering, all cores running at 100% it maxes out at about 70c.
I'm going to upgrade to the 3.4 ghz quad AMD and I expect temps to be higher but I will post them when I know for sure.
70° C should be the maximum, beyond that the lifetme of the chip is beeing reduced fast. Try to stay in the low 60°s or less.
The temperature alone is not a good indicator, especialy not for overclocking. CPUs have so called hot spots, they are areas that become a lot hotter than most of the chip. The temperature you see in the BIOS or tools is only an average and hot spots can be much hotter.

AMD says 80 degrees Celsius is when things go bad (e.g. instability and potential damage). If I recall correctly Intel is the same. If the system is running hotter than 60 degrees Celsius I would be concerned and double check everything is setup correctly. Fans going in correct directions, nothing is obstructing airflow inside of and outside of the case (don't put computer in a closed cabinet), make sure all fans are plugged in, etc. Cheers!
