View Full Version : first box model
howdy
this is the first time i am using box modeling to create a model.
i never got into it before as i taught myself 3d and started of with a technique involving the modeling of seperate parts and then joining them all together.
im starting to rig and animate alot lately and have realised the value and importants of loop edges in models. that is why i ahve turned to box medeling. this is a head i did yesterday morning.
im not entirely happy so please c&c the hell out of it !

hello
first i would like to say that i feel schizophrenic right now - replying to myself. that seems to be a problem with me...i always struggle to get feedback. will anyone who has had experiance with face modeling ( specifically box modeling / loop edge modeling ) and facial rigging and animation please look at the model and wireframe render ive attached and give me some feedback as to the technical aspects of the geometry.
secondly, i realise that it is a mission to open up another window to view this file. how do i post it so that it shows on the thread ?

Very nice.
I'm like you, i've just posed my head right here and waiting to get some feedbacks, but it will not hurts to tell you that you have done a very good job. Is it done by subdivision ?
for the picture, just find a web host where you could put your files (dont try geocitie.com it would not work) then come here and just write the link like this :
[i m g ]your_url_file[/ i m g ]
put "img" instead "i m g" .
good luck
righto.....well thanks for the positive comment lazzhar. ill go look for yours now.
anything that could be improved apon. i suspect that the flow of geo from the jaw to the mouth is dodgy  tips and hints are needed
anyway, here is a quick render. i spent five minutees applying a very very basic, non SSS skin surface tot he model and have lit it using the lightgen plugin and scripts. for those who dont know, this takes an hdri and converts it across to lightwave as a specified number of lights, arranged as a globe, each light matching the strength and color of the light sources in the hdri.
this technique removes the necessity of rendering with radiosity and all the problems that go with using hdri for illumination !!!
this render took 8.8 seconds an a dual pentium 2, 800:surprised trust me this is a slow computer and this is a very fast render

Nice modell to satrt box modelling with, and IMO a great challenge to modell a head!
And also nice work sofar. Some wireframe would help a lot to make suggestions on mesh topology, but as far as you've gon, I think its good eneugh, because I don't know if you want to make it photoreal, or from some reference, or its forming like as your vertieces go...
And one thing: take care of the eyes! The area around the eyes is critical, and right now, in this stage it is quite simple, and lacks detail. Please refer to some reference. This will add a great amount of realism to the final image!

Hey Joooooonbooooooy :D
Did you model this according to the Keyframe tutorial? You're going to hate me for saying this, but come on - you can do better!! Remember the gargoyles?! This is a decent enough start I guess, now you just need to get in there and start adding detail - more angles and stuff, this is too puffy and cartoony (unless that is what you are going for?).
The main problematic areas at a quick glance are definitely the mouth (banana mouth syndrome!), and the back of the head after the ears - it needs a bit of reshaping. I also agree that the geometry between the ear and the jaw looks strange. That funny little quad that sits between all the larger quads seems a little out of place.
Well, you have an artistic eye, so I bet you'll tweak this to perfection in no time :)
Then lets pretend it's Simon or Sharlto and blow it up!
