View Full Version : HDRI Sphere vs Sky Object
Anadin 09-03-2003, 09:30 AM I've been trying to get decent results animating using HDRI lighting (at something close to an OK render time) and I saw in the manual (the 8.1 addendum) that we should not use a sphere for the light as it casues sampling errors.
But then the kitchen scene on the maxon tutorial for HDRI uses a sphere for the light.
Anyone know which one is right?
Anyone doing animation with HDRI (the flicker is a bugger!)

i've made short (10 sec) animation with hdri, and maps was on sphere, but very often i'm using sky for hdri,
diffrents are when you use a HDRI for one little object for example cup, bottle, better is use a sphere,
but when you try to make a light for a car or buildings, sky will be better idea
if i wrote something wrong please correct me :p

So you didn't have any flicker problems with the HDRI using a sphere then.
Other than having to change the intensity of the HDRI between sky and sphere objects I can't see much difference.
It's just that the manual addendum is pretty firm in saying not to use a sphere.

try to use two different Hdri Spheres... one for the reflection and one for lightning. Use the render tag to set the reflection sphere only visible for rays and the other only visible for GI. Now u can blur the HDRI Material with a MIP Interpolation Offset Value of 10-30. Hope it will help...

My understanding is that the sky object is a sphere that automatically adjusts its size to the size of your scene. That should make it more efficient than using a sphere.

This is the bit (not the addendum, the Advanced Render manual)
"Avoid using a large sphere in place of the Sky object, otherwise the radiosity effect will take longer to calculate and will also be less acurate. This is because the sphere will change the length of the geometry in the scene, causing the distance between shading points to change. For more details, see "Min Resolution / Max Resolution""

well, that last bit says it all, doesn't it? So skies it is, spheres are out. Unless someone doesn't believe Maxon's claims.
