View Full Version : Enchanted forest - Environment/Character - Matt Clark

Here's my idea: He's a giant. He's made of tree/roots/vines and he carries an entire forest on his back (ala Atlas).

As you can see I've already got going, you'll have to excuse the scribble - it's there to give an impression of what I'm thinking...

cool concept
I think it would be better
if the ball looked more like
a chunk of ground he lifted
off the earth (flatter and
more triangular with roots
dangling underneath)

Great idea, really original.
I wonder what kind of envirement this giant creature lives in?
My first thought :lightbulb is that it would be really cool if in a possible hypermodern concrete-future he is the last forrest left on earth :)

Oh DAMMIT!!!:annoyed:

Once again, I choose to enter the challenge thinking "hehehe, Matt Clark might pass this one by..." - but no, foiled again.

Might as well format my C:\ drive...

This idea is excellent, and the irritating thing is that you will execute it brilliantly. You talented talented talented git.

I know its a sketch, but one thing though,
the trees/roots/vines-guy is a bit uniform, i guess some difference in thickness of the spaghetti thingies could make it even better ?!

Great concept, great rough, great great. Can't wait to see it when it's done.

P.S. Sgt.Pepper's idea for the BG sounded interesting, but either way that's just genius.

MAN I think all the replies just say it.
It is a really cool concept.
I don't know if it is your intention but it would be cool if he was attached to the ball, Like he and the bal are one, Grown into each other?. That would make him more destined to carry it all his life. Wouldn’t it.
If! he is a living beeing.

By the way. If seen your movie on how you made the Start Wars character and I must say it is a great way you made it, it looks so easy. Of course it was >>FAST FORWARDED>>. Do you have more of those movies.
For a beginner, like me, with 3D stuff it is quite cool to see how other people use the tools.

What kind of inane f00l are you? some people have jobs to do other than sit on a forum and post constant updates of a new finger joint or the reshaping of a tree limb.

I doubt very much Matt is bothered what people think about how many updates he does.
The only reason he, and the majority of the people here do this, is for a bit of industry notice. All studios and other pro's are really bothered with is the end result, which I'm sure will be posted in due time.

so do yourself a favour and chill a bit.

BTW, nice work so far Matt (long time no hear).

I highly doubt that that post was serious. Chill is right.
And Industry notice!? Really? Hmmm, I must rethink my priorities. I do this for fun and practice.

Ahh yes, on to Matt.
Wow! That looks really good so far. How the heck did you get those roots to make the body? Is there some sort of Max plug-in?
It just looks so cool. You have turned me in to a groveling fan boy. he he he. I want your autograph...on my butt! JK

Hello, thanks for all the comments.

I'm as busy as hell, but I'll try and post an update later.

Just to address what has been said:

> The rock is just a place holder and will look very different

> These colours bare no resemblance to what I have planned...

>Vines will vary in thickness.. I've scripted it now :)

>Yes, he will merge into the rock more.

>When you see his legs you can see that he's actually balanced and not about to fall over.

>Freehand tools have indeed been used, as has Wire Jumble.

Cheers,

Hey, MATT.

Yea, kool concept. I agree... I think it would be kool if it leaned more towards the original concept and was a "piece" of earth on his back. Not a globe, or scaled down earth or planet, which some might get the impression of. It would be kool if it was like a little world that some people lived on with clouds and stuff... and they didn't know they were really living on the back of this other creature.

Sorta like a tick on dog. The tick doesn't know it's a dog. They probably think it's a big forrest. There was some old Warner Bros. cartoons like that where these ticks lived on a dog, and they have villages, even a circus, on this dogs back.

I would reference the Discworld novels by Terry Pratchett. Some of the most absolute funniest stuff ever. Do a search for it, if you don't already know. To get you hooked, here are the 4 directions (much like nort, west, east, south)
Hubward
Coreward
Spinward
Widdershins.

Heh. :D

Oh, the discworld is suspended in space on the backs of 4 giant elephants, and those are standing on the back of a giant turtle. The biggest theological discussion on the Disc is this:

"What sex is the turtle?"

Hope this gives you a flavor of what I'm getting at...

Good work!

leigh
05-27-2002, 05:09 PM
Oooh yeah Howard, those books are fantastic!! And absolutely hysterical too. I think all the participants in this month's challenge could benefit, inspiration-wise, from reading a couple of those novels. I know I've had loads of crazy yet cool ideas from them!

Actually, there is a book out there (can't remember who published it though) on the art of the Discworld, with lots of cool sketches and paintings of the cities (although no picture could ever give the reader an idea of the smell of Ankh-Morpork), which would be a cool reference too...

Heheheh I actually met Terry Pratchet a couple of years back, and you'd never think that this little man in a safari suit could come up with such wacky books!

Go Luggage!! :buttrock:

"...the entire Purpose of the Universe is to make possible a being that will live in England, an island off the coast of France, and spend hsi time writing Discworld novels. Which is exactly what he does."

hehehe

AJ
05-27-2002, 11:30 PM
Now I'm not normally one to divert the nature of a thread from it's original topic...

(You may want to wipe the coffee from your screen)

Oh, here we go (again) - It's been said that Pratchett is one of those things that lots of people enjoy, but feel guilty... And to announce that you read Pratchett in public is akin to admitting murder to most people.

But the Discworld books are excellent!

And Luggage is by far one of the greatest characters ever devised (with the possible exception of 'the Death of Rats') :bounce:

(Please still talk to me)

Ok, so I've been a bit slack in updating this time, but that only because of the lack of hours in the day ;)

Here's where I am:

http://www.clarky85.freeserve.co.uk/forest5.jpg

This only really represents 20% or so of what I have in mind (although I think I'm probably being over ambitious...).

Needless to say lots will change:
* more variation in the actual forest (and a slightly different (taller) composition to show it off more). Possibly signs of habitation which I started to hint at here.
* the rock itself will be more detailed (both maps and geometry), with vines and roots etc.
*general lighting and colours/environment are not final.
*working on some atmospheric stuff - clouds and fog.
*twig man will get a further layer of very thin vines and branches to help convey his size. Possibly work on his textures.

05-29-2002, 09:47 PM
oh my god that is a great update. really great idea. what are your plans for the background?

great work

SCIFI-3D-zoo
05-29-2002, 09:53 PM
Again, I think it would be more dramatic if the scale of the world on the ball was larger. I mean a huge forrest, a little world on there. A little sky of clouds just over the ball. It's like it's own little world on his back.

The ball texture should look more like earth... with dirt and rocks.
I'm sure this part you plan on changing alot.

Maybe have vines going from his arms into the ball too. It's almost like he's stuck to this ball. Maybe it can be like a wart on his back. This guy is slaved to carry this world on his back?

Matt-Clark
05-29-2002, 10:15 PM
Hello George, fancy seeing you here. ;)

Yes - the other thing I was going to mention was the scale of the forest. It's all going down (so in effect the rock and the carrier are huge).

Id have to disagree with the face comments before. I think the thing that might be unsetteling to people is the fact that the face is looking out at us. That's all, really.
You can turn it away so it isn't engaging the audience, and no one will even notice.
Or keep IT looking at us and give us something to haunt our minds for a little while after we see (but we can't quite put our finger on ) it.

excellent thought Matt. I really like your design, its very original. BUT (damn i like being a BUT), i'm not as sure as I would say this is an enchanted forest, but then again, i'm seeing only up to 20% of the whole thing. I'd agree with Equinoxx about the face, excellent remark IMO. Also, some of the roots or trunks, look like worms, due to texture and model. And one last comment, or rather idea, how bout he holds a piece of land, that's been recently ripped off the ground? You could make pieces of land falling, dirt, deep roots hanging from the bottom.

Carlocki
06-12-2002, 06:45 PM
My own critique
so the eyes of the Atlas make everything too much ....Iron Maiden 's Eddie.
to me the forest on the rock could be remain just a forest with no architecuture...it cuold be enough yet.
the background white is fascinating..neutral i like it
the rock need more texturing and detaling...as to be as a real pice of ground.....realism insted of fantastic shape of hte Atlas
and for last...where is an update?

Thanks for all the replies. I've not been able to update and work on my challenge as often as I've done in the past due to other commitments.

Because of this I'm not going to have time to finish this challenge, so I thought I'd try and get a something pleasing out of it before it's thrown on the 'unfinished' heap.

http://www.clarky85.freeserve.co.uk/version2.jpg

I've turned it into more of a photoshop creation, so I'll exclude myself from the challenge, but I think I'll try and finish the image when I have time. There's a few things here I plan to deal with; not happy with the sky (esp round the top of the image), there's those annoying branches to the right of his head that don't look natural, and the trees still look a bit to uniform (they're obviously all cloned ;) )

Cheers,

Yep, I'm definitely going to do something with it. It's just a case of not being sure whether it'll be finished for the deadline or whether the route I'm taking it means that it breaches the bounds of the challenge.

I don't rely on the freelancing to pay the bills anymore, that proved far too unreliable. It never ceased to amaze me how during my 2 years of freelancing clients insisted on walking all over me and generally treating me like sh*t.
So for the last 5 months I've been working fulltime in a games studio, as well as keeping my hand at freelancing with some loyal clients *and* doing stuff on the side like these Challenges. That's why I'm always whining about not having much time. :)
