Well ive been a bit reluctant to post this one up as I have been working on it here and there in an odd manner. A little modeling, a little texturing, playing with cloth-sims, but I'm at the point where I need some help on proportions. They seem slightly off to me, but I just cant put my finger on it.

He is a greek hoplite, so on average they were a bit shorter than modern men. Were talking 2500 years ago or so. So 5'5" - 5"9 range is the look I am going for. This is still very much a work in progess, nothing is final on modeling and only the face has gotten real attention on the texturing.

Any comments and crit are welcome, but I mostly need help at this stage on proportions, and if anyone has ideas on what bronze armor should look like that would help also. Thanks a lot guys.

Anyone have ideas? I'm thinking he's still a bit short. closer to 6 heads tall. Reworking the legs again and will post an update in a bit.

Wow, that's great! I'm a huge ancient/medieval warfare fan, with a particular interest in Greek warfare. I was actually in the process of making a CG film called Myth, featuring hoplites, but started working on another project instead. Anyway, some crits:

First, I admire your attention to realism, but aesthetically speaking, you're taking no risks. You're representing what are found in archaeological digs, things that have spent nearly 2500 years under dirt. Some Greek armor featured gorgeous designs telling myths, showing family or city history, or telling a warrior's personal prowess. Since each hoplite was responsible for providing his own armor, there was lots of variety. Personalize his armor a little with bump or displacement maps. It may not be 100% historically accurate, but aesthetically speaking, it adds a lot of dimension to the character.

Secondly, some of the proportions look a little off to me. The head looks a little large compared to the rest of the body. I think you could afford to make the legs and forearms a little more muscular. It might just be the angle, but right now, your hoplite looks like he's got gimpy little forearms in comparison to the rest of him.

Thirdly, he needs some hobnailed sandals on his feet. At the moment, his feet look a little odd, but if you cover them up with some sandals, I think you'll solve that problem satisfactorily.

Other than that, great work! Maybe you're aiming for a perfectly historically accurate figure based on rock-solid archaeological estimations, but I think he'd benefit from a little artistic (though not totally unfounded) license.
