View Full Version : Struggling with shadows with multipass

Hi all,

my basic question is:

How do I replicate the RGBA with a blend channel and separated reflection and shadow channels?

In more detail...

I'm doing a GI animation but want to be able to tweak shadows and reflections in post, so multi-pass comes to mind.

What I've been doing is a blend channel, with everything except for shadows and reflection, then doing separate channels for them. Opening in After Effects, reflection channel set to Linear Dodge seems almost exactly the same as RGBA, however I can't for the life of me get Shadows to display properly - it's just a layer of black.

I've also tried using the shadow channel as a mask on the diffuse channel, but no joy there either.

Any pointers please?

Thanks

Jon

OK - I've got a pretty good result by rendering out those channels that form the blend channel as separate channels, and then opening up the .aec file into After Effects. Not too taxing, and perhaps obvious.

However, there is still a discrepancy between the results I get with these layered multi-channels and the RGBA channel, or even a blend channel with all channels switched on.

Is this a known issue? A compromise that arises with using multi-channels?

Would be grateful for some wisdom.

Thanks

Jon
