Hi everyone,

Welcome to the new Painter forum on CGTalk. This forum is specifically for all Painter users to share tips, tricks, techniques or help each other out. Robert "Lunatique" Chang will be moderating this forum, and I'll chip in as well.

Enjoy,

Leonard

Great news!

OT, but been wanting to ask this for some time: Is it possible to have a Maxon Bodypaint forum too?

Cheers

Only if it warrants one. We generally don't start forums unless we know that there's sufficient demand. Empty or non-active forums serve no purpose.

Here is a custom set of Concept Art brushes for Painter 6 I made. I basically designed it so you only have to have this set of tools on screen, and have most everything you need right there one click away. There are 2 setups you can choose from.

http://www.planetshane.com/Paintings/ConceptPallette's.jpg

Chick here for the zip (http://www.planetshane.com/Paintings/ConceptBrushes.zip)

Sadly, they don't work in Painter 7 or 8. Arggg, don't even get me started about 7 or 8. You can't even have custom pallets in 8.

6 is the best, and it won't even run on my new system, that stupid memory error.

Anyway Enjoy!

a great initiative. im a user of photoshop and have been gleering at painter for years now but i have not really been able to switch due to some intuitive lacks (as i see it) in painter that im used to having in photoshop. i hope this will open more door to me so i can make the switch. i really like painter, but i just need a kick in the ass to make the swap :D

cool. painter 8's brush creator is pretty damn cool. but if painter warrants a new forum, should PhotoPAINT get one too :p? I mean PhotoPAINT's batch scripting capabilities rips photoshop's butt. There are lots of cool things about PhotoPAINT .

Alright!!! Painter forum!!! Love it.
:applause:
Question. I heard that Painter 8 has a hard time with tiff and targa files with alpha channels to use for texturing or decaling ina 3d app. When you use PShop there isnt a problem. But I read in the Painter list forum that it cant handle this well. Anyone have any luck using a Painter file for a texture map in a 3d app?
Thanks.

Shane - If you're using windows, make sure your virtual memory settings are set below 1024mb. It should work then. I have version 8 now, but I still use my old version 5. And it works fine if I drop the virtual mem down before I use it. I think back when they developed it the programmers didn't think anyone would have so much memory. :D Hope that helps.

Cool to see this forum! Hope it does well.

Maybe I'll get into Painter one day. But for now I guess I just have to sit back and enjoy other artists work. Here's one ;)

Hi,

Rob (Lunatique) was kind enough to invite me to join all of you in your new Painter forum.

Congrats! It looks like you're off to a great start.

spm,

If by "swap" you mean trade Photoshop for Painter.....

don't!

Painter and Photoshop make a good team. Either program without the other will leave a serious artist without some tools and features they'll need.

Learn Painter, use Painter for what it does best.

Use Photoshop for what it does best.

That's... the best! ;)

I don't know, I just wish it would work.

awsome news. i just made the hugh jump from painter classic to painter 8 this week, and its very very impressive. well, compared to P classic anyways. i've found it works seamlessly alongside photoshop. you can Save in PSD and open PSDs with all layers and stuff. which is cool! and the choice of brushes is crazy, i;ve spent hours going through each one to see what it does!

I cant wait to see some cool work appearing.:buttrock:

Shane - Well that's a bugger... Did you have all the lastest updates for your version when you tried lowering the virtual mem? You can get the updates for old versions here:

ftp://ftp.corel.com/pub/Painter/

Hope you can get it working. I'm still running win2k so maybe that has some effect, but I doubt it. I know when I had this problem it drove me nuts, the updates in addition to the virtual mem is the best guess I have for you at the moment.

Nice machine btw! She must tear it up. :) Enjoyed your site too.

Hmmm, darn, in Corel Painter 8 only the F1 to F12 keys can be remapped, and the Clear command isn't mapped to the Delete key by default. In other programs I like to "Ctrl + A" then "Delete" to clear the workspace, but in CP8 you can't do that. Doing a "Ctrl +A" then "Ctrl + X" works, but I always get a "Are you sure you want this huge ass scrap sent to clipboard?" Grrr..... If they have an SP1 they need to get that fixed!!!

Finally!!

I've been waiting for a good source for Painter. I'm getting tired of finding the same "tomato" tutorial over and over again.

Anyone find some awsome Painter tutorials?

I've got a tablet, so it definately helps!!

Use Ctrl/Command+A then either use Ctrl/Command+X or hit the Backspace key.

You should only be getting that message when switching from Painter to another program while something you copied in Painter is still on the clipboard.

Shane ---- I started a thread in the Photoshop forum about having a similar brush set for Photoshop? Do you have one or does anyone else have one? If so, reply at the following thread.

can i just be a dumbass girl for asking this question... why use Painter and Photoshop together?? i thought that Photoshop is to deal with photo manipulation instead of digital drawing/colouring?

Lunatique
09-06-2003, 03:01 AM
Guess you never heard of Craig Mullins?

Take a look here: www.goodbrush.com

This man practically changed the way people look at how Photoshop could be used.

kex
09-06-2003, 07:18 PM
why use photoshop and painter together well painter gives the computer artist the ability to.....

emulate real paint

but photoshop takes a diffrent aproach to painting as it lays down pixels precisely.

its hard to explain its something you must experience.

another point that struck me the painter and photoshop forums being in the same forum.

well thats what been happening b4 this forum in the photoshop one. all it does is create a gooey problem when people ask for help etc...

Trickster
09-07-2003, 12:22 AM
thanx for the site babes. i don't know i'm still kind of edging away from Photoshop cos it's a bastard to use (sorry for the language)

i think that i haven't really gotten use to the program or have the experience of using it!

@kex: so you are saying to me that Painter is goood for digital colouring whiles Photoshop is just a cleaning up tool??!! (no offence to Photoshop users):hmm:

dpvtank
09-07-2003, 02:10 AM
its more that

Photoshop is an image EDITING tool

while

Painter is more of an image CREATION tool.

Trickster
09-07-2003, 03:59 AM
ah i see...:)

Tonsen
09-07-2003, 06:42 PM
Although, you make an interesting point there dpvtank. The key word is tool. I used a screwdriver just the other day to hammer in a nail...

Tool's can be used differently, it's all up to the person using them.

Great to have a little spot on the forums for Painter conversations. Thanks moderators for keeping the place well updated and organized.
