View Full Version : Enchanted forrest - Enviorment/character - Adam
Here is my character for this challege. Tell me what you think. he is still very early. I need to fix the eyebrows and thicken the face up and ofcourse build the rest of it. um I have it drawn out and will scan it and post it in a couple of days. Hopefully I will have time to do all that I want between school and work. I would love your comments. I love this forum. It has the best artist I have ever seen and tons of insperasion.

A little update. Bulked up the face and did a quick temp for the eyes. Re rendered it so that you can tell its shape a little better. My idea is to have him as a early forest native. He is the basics of a cromag, a mixture of man and monkey. I plan to make his body fit and naked except for some peircing jewlery, such as large ear plugs and some skin piercings. I think that this fit/athletic look will fit his need to survive.

The weather here is nice today.. not as hot as usual ;)
Anyway, the model is good so far. What program are you using? It looks better than anything I've made so far.. What is the rest of it going to look like?
It is kinda of cloudy and rain earlier.
Any who...
I did this in max. The rest of the body is going to have the posture of a human, but the bulky arms and legs of a monkey. He will be very thin and pretty tallwith a defined cheast, but not to big. His hands will be 4 fingered and large (about the size of 3/4 his cheast). His feet will be similar.
Thanks for the comment.
Keep em coming.

The face looks awesome! I look forward to seeing the rest of your character. Do you have any sketches?
yes I do have sketches and I scanned them before class but I just found out that they saved curropted to my zip disk so I will have to copy them agin tomorrow if I get a chance

I have to give Mc Don a big yuck but I did just finish a wonderful plate of spagetti alfredo. MMMMM-mmm -MMMMM
Hey thanks for the comments. It is great to actually hear some reply. please feel free to point out any modeling or other flaws you see.

alfredo mmmmmmmmmmm.... its quick to add more critique ,its good for me now ,keep working - the only thing i see its the little tagency on the middles of the face but i guess you will fix it   :buttrock:  :bounce:

here is another little update

Looks good so far. Just one comment. I think you should make the nostril holes (?) larger. Looks quite odd with those two teeny weeny holes.
leigh
05-22-2002, 04:49 PM
Yeah, I agree with Mikael, make those nostrils a bit bigger....
Otherwise, cool work so far
Thanks for the crits you two. I will do that later today. I got class right now but tonight I should have some time between school and work. God I can't wait to be done with school and actually being doing this for some really money instead of the crap minimuim wage job, well that is if I can get a job in this over crowded market. Later tonight I will have a new post.
Thanks for the support.
Im not nearly as fast of modelers as most of you and can't dedicate that much time to this , but I finally finished most of the head. He still needs ears and the neck is only started.
I have decided he is going to be a tribal monkey man.
He will be wearing just a leather cloth over his genitials and naked on the back so you get the joy of seeing his lovely rump.
I think he will live atop a tree in a little hut made of bamboo and twigs. I hope to make him seem as a mysticall leader of the forest. The forest will be very dense and full of raping veins. Hopefully I will be able to model the entire forest as well. I don't really want to paint it because I need to get better at modeling organic plants and such as well as textureing (if I get the time)
Hope you enjoy it
Please feel free to oint out any weird errors you may see or tell me how I could make him better.

The hole for his ear is too high up on his head. It's going to look weird once you add in the ear. As far as your image idea goes, I think is should be cool. The bamboo idea should give it a neat asian feel...rather than northern european or southern american as a lot of these feel. For the texturing/fur on your character I'd start out with redish fur like an orangatan's fur. Try that and then maybe turn it mostly grey to suggest age since he is the guardian of the forrest.
It's coming along nicely...again I'll ask...any sketches???
I'm sorry. I do have scanned sketches I just haven't been able to get them off the computer I saved them to. I don't have sacanner so I used my schools and haven't been able to find time to get to it and save them to a disk so I can upload them.
Ohh and I know the ear is a little high. I plan on fixing that when I get the ear all modeled out and attached.
I will draw out may forest house tonight at work but proubably won't be able to upload it until monday or tuesday because I going on a short trip for the holiday.
Also I was wonderin if you all think he should have hair, because I don't own a hair plug in and therefore can't really add hair. Maybe it could be textured in but I have no idea how.

Still the nostrils. In my opinion they should be much larger.
Otherwise itīs turning out nicely.
can do! I will fix the nostrils when i get home from vaction monday. I have been working on some different concepts for the enviroment and will try to find some time today to do a little more drawing.
:bounce: :bounce:  :bounce: :bounce:
Well I finally scanned my enviroment. I think this is the one I will end up using. I'm not sure if I will paint it or model it. I will decide that after my charcter is done. Right now I'm thinking of painting the BG and models in the blank section in the front left. That is were the charcter will be posing.
I hope you like it and would love to know what you think about modeling or painting or a combo.

Do you guys think the nostrils are big enough now?

I made a quick sketch of how I think they should be in size.

this is just my opinion, but I really think they should go in this direction.
Looking forward to some proxy 3D model of the environment.

Yeah, I like Mikael's nostrils a bit more myself :p
okay thanks I will start to fix that in a minute but tell me what you think of the ears and the plugs i modeled today between class. Do you think they are big enough and in the right place.
:shrug::airguitar :shrug:
P>S any ideas on how to make fur without a plug in. I'm using max
Tellerve
05-29-2002, 06:00 AM
That could be tough, however, when I used Max I made some grass with having a triangle essentially with a double sided texture on it. I then used the scatter operator on the polygons I wanted the grass on. I also had three variants of the grass in different stages of bending so the grass wasn't all the same. It certainly wasn't/isn't perfect but it may work for you considering you don't have any sort of hair plugin.
Tellerve
well her is the nostrils a little bigger and angeled. I know they are still a little small but i kinda like that. tell me what you think
Oh and any ideas about fur texturing.
:wavey:  :wavey:
Thanks Tellerve I have tried this and just can't get the controlled natural look of hair because they all lean so randomly and are so uniform even when scattered in an area. If you know of any free hair plug ins I would appreciate it greatly. I'm not fishing for illegal software such as shag. I would rather do this lagit for my portfolio and so I can use brazil (brazil dosen't work with shag anyway)
ZrO-1
05-29-2002, 06:14 AM
Yeah the new nostrils look awesome! I think the ears look pretty good. maybe they could be scaled between 5 and 10% bigger. And possibly move them forward by half their width. I love the idea of using the plugs in the ears. Very cool.
Tbhaks ZrO-1
You work is great and it is nice to hear some positive reinforcment. I'm glad you like the plugs. He is going to have a very tribal apperance so I thought they would fit well. Do you have any ideas on making hair in max or texturing hair

Does Max have a feature like Maya where you can write your own scripts? If so you might be able to make the ground be a particle emitter, but have the emitters put out geometry (like cylinders) instead of particles. I remember reading a tut over at highend 3D about emiting geometry from a particle emitter, but I think it involved some custom scripts.
Tellerve
05-29-2002, 07:01 AM
Hmm, I'll look around although I haven't been keeping up with my Max knowledge since I moved into the Advanced part of my schooling and XSI. I might have Shag, not sure though, so umm, PM if you decide you'd like it. Otherwise I'll keep an eye out for that grass tutorial, maybe you can gleam something from it. Or perchance a demo/free version of some hair plugin.
Tellerve
Well here is the last post for the night. I added the neck and some of the muscles (still needs some fine tuning. Tell me if you see any problems with the face or any way I could improve it a little. Just want to know what all of you think about it so far and if he looks like an intersting charcter.
Tanks for the comments so far
:wavey:  :wavey:
I wouldn't mind shag except it dosen't work with brazil and I love the advantages of brazil more than the idea of shag but thanks for the idea. Also you can do particle emitters maybe I will try that. They just dont give you much control. Do you all agree that he definetly needs hair not just rough skin
Clanger

I thought Shag worked with Brazil so long as you set Shag to render in geometry mode.

Hey Adam, your model is coming along well
Just one thought - the folds of skin are cool, but they look a little too sharp edged to be organic :surprised - although, I guess if you cover the head with fur then you won't really see them anyway...
Oh, you should also bring up the gloss amount on the eyeballs - they don't look wet enough yet ;)
MikaelPersson
05-29-2002, 12:50 PM
I like your earplugs.
I think ZrO1 was refering to particle instancer in maya. You could maybe use it for fur in maya. But I think it would be rather hard.
Hope you have some equvivalent in max.
Aearon
05-29-2002, 01:49 PM
sure, you can set the particle type to instanced geometry in max
Hey I will try doing that with shag today at school. I haven't really used it much (Since I have to use it at school). Do you know of any tut that might help me. Our school copy came with no user manual so no one (not even the teacher) knows how to use it beyond the very basic fur setup.
:wavey: :wavey:  :wavey: :wavey:
Oh and Leigh. I know what you are talking about. I will try to add more edge segments to the wrinkles so I can round them a little. I don't know if you will see it when I texture anyway but it would be nice to have it there anyway. What do you all think about just rough cracked gray skin? Anything else that needs to be changed on the head.

well today I decided during class i decided i may as well start a tree so here it is so far. It still needs a lot of work and is a little plain right now (I have just been doing the roots) but tell me what you think anyway.
If you have any ideas on how to spice it up I would love to hear them!!
Thanks for your comments
:applause:  :applause:
I noticed it kinda looks like the base is sitting on the ground not in it. That looks a little weird huh.
well here is the finished trunk. I might add a little more detail (knots bumpd ect..) but this is basically it. Proubably most of the trees in my sceen will be alteration of this one.
I still need to add the top and branches.
tell me what you think
:wavey: :shame: :wavey:
MikaelPersson
05-30-2002, 08:44 AM
You need to make the root broader at their base. Not straight out and the same size all the way.
Good start.
good point! I will do that
well here is the finished tree. tell me what you think of the branches and the overall character. I modified the roots a little so that they are all a little different in size. Does it need anything else?
:buttrock: :wavey: :buttrock:
should the trunk be a little taller?

Unless you're going for the "tree of life" from the lion king movie, I'd make the trunk taller. Right now it looks too short for the width of the base.
pumpkin butt
05-30-2002, 10:22 PM
Perhaps your tree should have a few more branches coming right at us from this angle. It looks a little bit like it was grown up against a window. You're still fabulous...

Muscles looking real good.
Just a thought though. If you are making an ape. I think the head should be alot larger in comparison to his shoulders. Now it looks more like human proportions.
But hte shapes are coming along real nicely.
hey Mikael im going to give the upper body (cheast) human qualities but he is going to be incredigle skinny and tall so he has a clumsy half human look. his bottom legs and forearms are going to be very large and taper out to the hand and foot so he has almost a popeye arm style. I want him to appear kinda akward and silly. I think it will add to the not so incredible intellegent monkey look you see in certain smaller ones while still making refrences to humans.
here is the cheast and a simple version of the rip cage. The rip cage is going to be very obvious because how skinny he is
Here is a shot of the back. I really like the muscles. what do you think?
oh and the seem in the middle will obvoiusly be taken out.
 :wavey:
ZrO-1
06-01-2002, 10:06 PM
The muscles are really awesome Adam. That back is one of the best I've seen, even with the seam down the middle. Are you still going to add fur to him? Cause if you do I'm afraid most of those great muscles will be hidden :hmm:
I like the idea of making him really out of proportion. I think it could be cool. Have you looked at any pic of orangatangs? Except for the chest area they sort of have limbs that look like you described.
hey thanks. This is my first attempt at really doing lots of muscles. I haven't looked at any monkey images. The only refrences I have used are fitness magazine images and my own drwn refrences.
I don't think I will add fur. I think I will texture him with really rough turtle like skin, only a more grey color. What do you think about that.
I noticed you and mikael are the only ones that reply., but that is fine because at least i'm getting some response.
Tnaks for the comments guys.
I love your work very impressive modeling skill. I think that rough turtle like skin is a cool idea. The character itself is really cool. One thing that would be cool to see is a rough skin like you described that blends off into a more soft skin around the face and palms of his hands and on his stomach or something. It would look really awesome on him, just and idea I think i would add alot to your character. Keep up the great work
Great idea about the smooth sections. What color of skin sounds good to you? I'm thinking of a solid medium grey
ZrO-1
06-02-2002, 02:05 AM
What I'd do is have the tone lighten as the texture gets smoother. In other words, the really rough stuff would be a dark grey and the really soft stuff would be a light grey. That's what I'd do. ;) :p
yeah maybe a dark cool grey (slightly blue) for the rough and a light warm grey (slightly red) for the smooth sections. REally REally slight color chages focusing mostly on light and dark chages.
well here is a little update of the entire cheast.I know it looks a little silly with the head but I'm almost sure the attachment of the silly tapered arms will really really help! How does the shape look? This is the exagerated stimach I was talking about.
He is going to have a very round ass that should counter the rigid front look giving him a silly fun look.
and a back shot
the buns still need a little tweaking but that is the general shape.
Aren't they hot?
EDIT:
ooh I just decide that I think the ass should have smooth skin as well. What do you think? It might add to the monkey feel a bit.
ZrO-1
06-02-2002, 07:05 AM
Only crit with the body would be to blend the chest and sholder muscles together more. At the very least at the bottom of the chest muscle they should be even and touching.
His butt made me laugh. :) Talk about buns of steel...it looks like you could crack a walnut on those cheeks. :D I'm not knocking it. I like it it's just funny I think. LOL Good stuff!
I'm not quite sure what you mean about the muscles. Do you think that you could possibly draw a circle on one my images and then post it so I can see were you mean? I would greatly appreciate it.
Oh and yeah those buns of steel are just how I like em, nice and perky ;)

coming along nicely. I like your idea with things real out of proportion. A suggestion, I think you need to shorten the length of his throat/neck considerably. To give him more of an ape feel. But that is probably a matter of opinion.
well here is a little update. I'm going to wait on the neck until the arms and legs are done because I think it might come together a little more and make more sense them. He still looks kinda strange (man body) but I think the legs and arms will really fix that. I wondering if I should give him a package. I will be coverup in the front by a loin cloth but since I'm going to make the back open you might be able to see his hanging balls (hahahah);) :applause:
plus it would just be funny!!
well here he is so far. It is about time to start on the arms.
ZrO-1
06-03-2002, 12:43 AM
LMAO!
sure give him a package. Make it look like a couple of golfballs in a fuzzy tubesock. HAHAHA
hehe...seriously though, I like the tweaks to the chest it looks great. :D
since he is monkeyish and all I figure he should be pretty hung and have especially large balls so they show a little from behind.
I'm going to leave that for a little latter if I have time, though.
Hopefully I will!
;) ;)
I just came to the realization that his cheast (rib cage) is way way to wide. So I thinned it up a little tell me if it looks better.
oh and I also realized that the stomach was way way to defined and lacked any sort of charcter so I decided to give him a little bloated belly
here it is.....
pumpkin butt
06-04-2002, 12:14 AM
I like the width of the chest better now, but I kinda liked the extra definition. :drumrock: :curious:
I thought I would texture the tree and rsome rocks. It isn't perfect but will have to do (the lack of time I have).
well her it is I still don't have grass of enviroment but that will have to wait till the char is done.

WOW!great work!the monkey Char. is incredible!!i like the tree too!:applause:
hey thanks
I should be able to finish modeling the character this weekend. All I have left is the lower legs and arms.
Well I finally got the legs pretty much done. I still ned to add a bottom to the feet and some minor arches as well as toenails but the upper and lower leg are finished and the foot is close.
Here is a pic of the whole body.
I'm really liking his goffy shape. What do you guys think?
I will also post a shot of just the legs and feet next.
Here is just the legs.
Ohh and imagine the arms in a similar tapered design. He will have large hand and skiny upper arms.
The lighting is a little silly on the feet and kinda causes them to appear less detailed. They have a set of simple joints and bulging mid sections that can't really be seen very well in this image
Well since noone is replying I thought I would throw in a front and back shot with cartoon shading. I did all of the shading in standard max without the use of any plugs (I did not use illustrate and no post edits)
What do you think. I i get to all the background I will render it in a similar manner. Does this sound good??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

06-09-2002, 01:12 AM
I think the leg need to be more bigger to fit the body
u still have a great character;)
Do you think they should be bigger around or longer? Both the upper and lower leg or just one of them?
Thanks for taking time to respond
dodo3d
06-09-2002, 11:15 AM
I mean that the legs need to be bigger around don't scale it taller cause the tall is ok ,and I prefer that the upper but be more larger than the down one ,good luck
here is some referance images for the legs I hope it can help u
I'm sorry but I gotta say that I'm going to keep the top smaller. I really like the silly out of porportion look that It gives him. Plus it adds to his thin charcter. Thanks for responding though. It is great to hear responses even if I don't always agree:) :) :)

Right on, your guardian is looking very cool, and that tree is great. Very nice muscles, and he has a cool character to him.
I think what you do with the arms will have a lot of impact on how the legs work, if they bear out those proportions it should work just fine. You seem to have a lot of perspective on the camera or viewport, they look way different from the lower view than looking down at him. Right now the only thing I'd say is it seems like the legs couldn't hold him up..I like the larger bottom than top, but maybe just make both a tiny bit thicker, or move the knee up? I'll shut up and wait and see what you do with the arms :D
ZrO-1
06-10-2002, 04:16 AM
Man I leave my computer for a day and I miss a lot. The legs look cool. I don't have any problems with the thickness since from the start you have been talking about how you would make him dis-propotionate and skinny. I think the only thing you need to tweak is the length of the lower legs. They look too short for the character. Either that or you need to move the knees up a bit. Other than that they look great! good work!

Right now the toon shader is too gradiated (too much of a graident) That and the specularity just make your character look hard and glossy. I think the shader needs to be mostly flat shaded and dropping to darker shades only at the very edge of the model. You should be able to tweak that by messing with the samplerInfo node (the one that uses the surface normal to camera angle ratio to shade the model) to have the drop-off happen sharper. Also try getting rid of all specularity. If you could post a version like that I'll let you know if I think it could work. (lol like I'm the king in the matter hehehe)
Hey thanks for all the crit. I will post the toon shade changes tonight when I get home from work. I have also modelled most of the arms, though they still need tweaking, but still have the hands left to do. I'm glad most of you like his silly proportions;) :) :p

Well I have noticed that I won't really be able to finish my whole scene in time so I have decided to just concentrate on texturing my charatcer. I'm not very good at texturing (actually I have only textured a few times) so it will takes me a pretty long time but please tell me what you think as I progress. I'm starting with the face and I am concentrating on the mouth area right now. What do You think of it so far? It is still very WIP. All I have really done is the facial cracks in the skin and a started on the color map. I'm starting with the bump first though so I can get a general Idea of how the color should chage acording to skin recesses (sp).
Well her it is
Oh and I think the mouth will be this off white color with more dark dull yellow tone as you get toward the lips.

I think that the bump is a little strong right now. Maybe tone it down a bit. As far as the design of the bump map that looks good...just a bit deep.

could you post a view of him directly from the side. Not looking down on him. The perspective makes his legs look to short.
He looked better with the arms attached. But still I think you need to alter his body to get him flowing together more nicely. For example either make his butt larger or the chest. Now it feels to much as different parts just stuck together.
I think the thing I am driving at is that you have to make his body the same way as his arms and legs. small/large difference, now it is to uniform.
I hope this made some sense. You are good at modelling itīs just that it could go one step further.
Good luck.
yeah sure. Also I think the loin cloth that I added helps a lot to fill out his lower torso area (or maybe not;) )
Well anyway here yeah go
sorry for the compression quality

I like the loin-cloth. I think it definetly helps to balence out the character vertically. I really like this guy I think he's cool. :p

hey jeremy nice to see your work. Good drawing. and the colors look well thought out it just needs to be tightended up a lot but I'm sure you already know this. What do you think of my texture so far?
Have a great time on your trip and I will see you at school> Hopefully I can see an update before you leave;)

well a little update. Just the bump and color so far. What do you think of the color of the lips. I kinda like it cause it is a unusually color for such a monkey looking char.

I like the color. It looks great. Nice blend between the lip tint and the skin.

sorry i wasn't specific enough adam. I think it looks way too spherical, and a bit too small maybe.
