In one of my motion capture projects, I transferred motion capture data from Vicon Blade to Motion builder. The animation clip on the character story track is fine but once I plotted the animation to the control rig or to joints I get a gimbal lock on the character’s neck joints. I’ve tried the following things to get rid of the gimbal lock:
-Used the gimbal killer filter in motion builder.
-Move the animation curves in the FCurves tab.
-Tried cutting out the animation where the gimbal lock begins on the story clip and then blended the animations back together but the gimbal lock would still come back after I plotted to character rig.
-Checked my motion capture data to see if I mixed up any markers but the markers were fine.
In the end, I ended up cutting the animation out on the neck joints to get rid of the gimbal lock but found myself having to reanimate the character’s head. Just curious, what do you guys do to get rid of gimbal locks in motion builder? Any suggestions on how to avoid problems like this in the future?
