You can achieve this effect in Video Post.

Here's a little run down of the process (from memory, so might be a little sketchy...)

Select your spheres, right click and select properties, assign a GBuffer Number in the panel - this is just so you can pick out those objects in video post with ease - for example, say you assign them the number 5.

Assign a red material to your objects.

From the top down menus, select Video Post. this will pop up the Video Post editor... If you've not seen it before it can seem a little odd (and fairly non 'Max like'), but needn't to worry! We'll tame that ugly interface like a limping dog! :D

Check the button with an arrow pointing to a Teapot, this is the Add Scene Event button, from the box that pops up - just select the viewport or camera that you want the effect (the glow) to be rendered in.

Now (making sure that you DON'T have anything highlighted in the Video Post windo), check the button that looks like a yellow rectangle with a wavy red line going through the middle, this is the Add Image Filter Even button.

From the new window that opens up, select the drop down list and choose Lens Effects Glow.

You can now edit the properties of you glow settings. The first thing to do is to select Object ID and change the number to 5 (the number we gave the two spheres).

To see what the effect looks like with the default settings, simply go back to the main Video Post panel and with the last scene event selected (the Glow Filter at this point) and press the button with the little running man on it (Execute Sequence), choose your render settings as you would normally and see what it looks like...

It's then up to you to play with the settings in Video Post, most are self explanatory - but the Manuals explain a lot about each setting and what it does.

One last thing - this glow is 'fake' and applied to your image after it's rendered, as a result it will not create any light (as you might expect from a glowing object). So I would recommend putting a red Omni Light in the scene where the Spheres are, and giving it a localised attenuation. This will help make the glow more convincing should the spheres be near any other objects.

Hope this helps!

BTW - The render Effects features also support glows, and with much better feedback than video post - I would play around there.

In fact I still have a glow demo up on my FTP:

I thought that render effects glow and videopost glow were the same, but eih, videopost's glow has some features(like inferno)that render effects hasn't

Look at glow options additional effects, you can add noise or other shader types there as well to "affect the effect', but if you can stand VP then whatever works right!
