Was just wondering about those adapters that can add a second monitor with usb. Has anyone ever tried it out for 3D work for like zbrush or maya? I'm sure there would be some lag, but how well does it actually show the work?

Some examples:

For a second monitor, why not just plug another screen into the other graphics card socket?

If you plug a monitor in via a USB graphics card (that's what they are essentially) you are going to slow down detrimentally in 3D apps. It uses an onboard junk graphics controller that's only suitable for web pages and email. You'd be better off plopping in a new graphics card (assuming your graphics card isn't full up).

Only good use for them would be for a laptop that didn't support an external monitor... and even then for limited (slow) applications.

Those adapters are only for 2D without any acceleration. Suitable for browsing the web and office tasks but unusable for anything 3D. Cheers!

So it would be ok to use them for palettes or script editors within a 3d application without slowing it down? I could use a third monitor for that

That depends. An editor like Notepad for example is 2D and doesn't require any acceleration (e.g. DirectX, OpenGL). Applications like Maya, Nuke, Houdini, they use OpenGL even for the 2D parts of the interface in which case the USB adapters probably would not work. Cheers!

What's with AE or Finalcut?

This "card" will be slow even if it only moves a simple larger bitmap over the screen. Realy, forget it for anything beyond showing a Powerpoint or reading some text.

After Effects prior to CS4 should be fine as they don't use OpenGL, but CS4 uses OpenGL for the interface. See system requirements for After Effects CS4 (1,280x900 display with OpenGL 2.0–compatible graphics card). Not sure about Final Cut Pro, or if the adapters would even work on Mac. Cheers!

Hehe... I figured it wouldn't work... I was actually thinking about making my own cintique and try to attach everything to a single usb by having the monitor and tablet attached to a usb hub. Ahh well, guess I'll have to do it with a couple of wires. Thanks for the replies.
