Ok crew heres my question. I have been using 3dmax at school and am ready to get my own copy. I have ordered a educational copy of Maya to see if it fits me before I spend 3k on software. Then I read about Cinema 4d in ComputerArts magazine. The user interface looks great and from what I see, the final renders looks sweet. My question is to you current C4D users. Is this as powerfull as 3d MAx or Maya? I rather spend 500 then 3,000. But I want some input from the actual users of the software. Thank you.

First of all, that would depend a bit on what you are planning to do.

Download the demo from Maxon.net and take it for a spin. Says more than a thousand words. :)

ok great, I looked for a demo a few days ago must of missed it. But thanks : ) As regardig to what I want to do, I do web design and animation (Mostly all my work is in Macromedia Flash). I currently use Swift 3d for Flash render but the modeling is non existant. At first I need something to model simple animation nothing big since I will be learning. Hopefully in a few more years I can push out somthing nice.

Thanks Guys

Ok I downloaded the demo version and I must say I like it. I still can't my wayaround being used to max and all but I like the premade objects. I love the ready to go terain plabne and hill top textures with a gradient on em. I can't find particles system yet though. Does the demo verion support em?

the demo supports everything in the studio bundle i believe.

the normal simple particle system is avaialable through the object menu. if you want to play with thinking particles then you will need to make an object ( null will do) right click on it, choose new expression and new xpresso xpression, then it'll addn an xpreso tag to your object, and open up the xpresso editor. right click in there and you can choose to add a new node, for instance one of the thinking particles generators like pstorm... then try connecting stuff away (tp is quite complex but there are links to tutorials in the forums above this one).

Thanks mdme

I was a bit confused but I already modeled a basic face, too bad I cant save in this version. I'm sold though I will go pick it up. 2 final questions. Can I get a copy at a store or is it only available on the net and do basic particles come in the standard package.

I don't think you'll find Cinema in a store. You can buy it direct from Maxon, or check on Maxon's site for approved distributors.

The basic version comes with the same particle system that was in XL7, but not Thinking Particles. The old particle system can still do some pretty good tricks though, especially if you add the Fizz plugin for collision and dynamic effects.

Glad you liked Cinema Terro :)
Just a little note: You said you wanted to create 3D stuff for Macromedia Flash. Sadly, there is yet no plugin from swift 3D to use in Cinema and the buildt-in FlashEx (swf exporter) makes noone happy.
Modeling objects, and importing them in swift3D standalone works great, but then you´re stuck with swifts animation possibilities like spins, zooms etc.

I really hope someone can make a better flash-exporter, or that Erain releases a C4D-plug, since I too use much of my 3D in flash...

Don't forget that if you're a student you can get the XL Bundle on a student license (the whole bundle will cost you around $200).

where are you based? if you can pick up a copy of this months computer artd mag it comes with a fully functionation and free copy of version 6 cover edition, with an upgarade option to full v6. this may save you some mony if you then upgrade to v8 xl alowing you to perhaps get the bundle.

have a look at this thread across at the C4D Portal (http://www.c4dportal.com) about rendering to flash etc.

i come from a max background, and have absolutley been converted to C4d. still have a lot to learn and the package still has improvements that can be made (particularly in the transform tools and axis control) but it will come in time. its a fantastic pakage.

I'm based in chicago, I get Computer Arts MAG every month , but had yet to pic up this months. I used max for years, but nothing big. I tried Rhino, also not my thing. Then C4D yesterday and bam :) I was set. For me the modeling is what counts and I really feel comfortable in it. I don't see a way to make a critical mistake in C4D because of the tight setup. Anyways...I'm gona run out of work and get the new Computer Arts MAg and upgrade lol so I can start using this today. Thanks guys
