Actually I quite like that, how's about something built up around a beer can for the body (just as a thought).
Cheers

I like what you've got so far, just needs some big goggly eyes :), the metal material is looking good too, for the body perhaps make a large clunky body, big arms, little legs, etc but give it more of steam powered industrial look rather than techy. make it the kind of the way a robot would look if it was in a fantasy story rather than a sci-fi scene
hmm well its kinda like a big metalic thing.
I would finish it a bit more but it does have some promise just get it more completed.

You've already got a bit of personallity going on there. It's a good start. I'd give it some different eyes though. Perhaps some big googly/glowing one's as squid has suggested. Good start and keep those updates coming! I LOVE bots! -- 3d_e

I'ts an unusal design Modestmouse, and that makes it interesting. I do however feel you need to give a bit more thought to the joints in his legs there though. Keep going

I think i might make the joints be some kind of bolt or hinge but the spheres work for now

It's definitely original! I'll give you that!
Here's what I think you should do: Before you make a model, take a pen and paper and draw your character/bot/whatever a lot of times.
It doesn't matter if you "can" draw or not, that's not the point.
The point is that you need to get familiar with your design before modeling it. Draw it from the front, the back, the sides, draw closeups of various details to figure out how they are supposed to work (like the knees of a bot for instance).
Why, you ask? Drawing is like a gazillion times faster than modeling. You can try out twentyfive different possible designs in half an hour, and in the end it means that you know exactly what it is you are supposed to model as you eventually fire up Cinema and start juggling polys.
And, while you're doodling those sketches, grab some reference material from the web. Use Google image search to find pictures of the stuff you need. Even if you are building an entirely fictional thing, it will still contain familiar, real things - and you can easily get some photos depicting such things, which will help you a lot while sketching and later on while modeling.
So, lots and lots of sketching and a bunch of reference images. This is a principle that applies not only to human models, but to every single thing you ever want to model. Sketches and references. Always sketches and references. No matter what.
I'm telling you this now, because eventually you will figure this out by yourself. But that might not happen until a couple of years and a lot of models from now. So, this is an opportunity to start working by these principles right now, today. A head start. Just do it.
I didn't realize how important these things were until, umm, maybe six months ago. If I had embraced it from the very beginning, about three years earlier, I would have been a much more skilled CG-dude by now.
So please take my advice. Sketches and references. You might skip doing it because it feels like it takes a lot of time. But in the end, it actually saves time - once you start modeling, you know exactly what to do, how to make it and how everything fits together. And the result will look better/cooler/whatever since you have spent some time focusing on the design rather than the technical aspects of modeling. The bottom line is that the actual modeling is the least important step in your production. The only thing that shows in your final image, is the design. Not how you made it, but how it looks. Except for us CGmonkeys, people couldn't care less how your model was made, they only see how it looks.
I hope you realize this is a friendly suggestion from one 3D-addict to another!

keep going bud...and don't be disheartened by people not commenting...its often cos people miss the post or don't feel they have anything to contribute...quality not quantity i say bud.
keep it up.

Yes i probably should start to draw things out and I really appreciate yoiur great advice james!
But for this I planed it out in my brain as i went and it seemed to work ok even though in the future I am going to sketch out what I make.
I saw an avatar of a CGTalker and that got me inspired, then before I would go to another section I would Map it out in my head. Worked for this one but definetly wont work for more complex models.
Yeah the floor is just tepmorary its just so he doesnt stand in black no-place land

gawd I'm gonna date myself here.
I really like this. the head reminds me of the Quiet Riot mask... yanno they did the song "Bang Your Head", anyhoo in their videos they had a character that used a mask like your robots head. humm... how about adding blood-shot eyes.. yeah .. that would do it for me.
