progerik 09-02-2003, 10:03 AM I would like to be able to change the opacity of the uv texture editor in maya, with the help of a slider or something inside the uv editor itself.
how can I do that ? ( I know almost nothing about mel script though so Ill need a detail explanation if possible :(
thanks in advance :)

I am assuming you want to do this so that you can tweak UV's and also watch the modeling viewport, so that you can see the changes in realtime?
I'm no MEL guru... but I'm pretty certain this can't be done, in Windows. And I would guess that it is not possible on *nix platforms either.
The drawing and placement of windows is handled by the underlying OS, and the window is opaque before anything is drawn in it. I'm rather sure that MEL has no control over this.
Convceivably, one could create an API plugin, I'm guessing, that would produce a hybrid, layered viewport window. It would be far more trouble than it is worth though, I'm sure.

this may not be possible through mell, but if you have a Nvidia graphics card and the newer set of drivers you can do this. it may also be possible with other popular graphics cards like ati but i dont know for sure.
what you have to do with the nvidia card is go into control panel and find Nview desktop manager click on the user interface tab then check the enable nview menu options in title bar. also while in here you have to set the level of transparency for the windows. i believe it uses the level set for taskbar transparency under effects so just go to effects and check the enable taskbar transparency box and set your desired percentage and uncheck the box .
then open maya and you will have a few new buttons next to your minimize restore an close buttons. launch your uv editor and you wont see these. what you have to do is right click on the title bar next to the minimize button and click the Attach to window part (should be a check next to it at first) then the buttons will appear like they are on the main window. now maya doesnt support this function, but it does still work. when you right click on the new buttons there will be a nview options at the bottom of the flyout menu go to that and then transparent.
i had a minor problem with this and basicly just had to move really fast to get the menu to come up becouse of a sort of bug. but it can be done. i was going to post a screen shot, but im guessing it does this with overlays and the screen capture doesnt get the transparent box. it didnt even show the editor, just the main maya window . best of luck hope this helps
Eric
at least it worked untill i tried to turn it off..... now it wont let me redo it....
