Does anybody know how I can make a leaves fo the tree? In MAX there is an option called scatter, maybe Maya has something similar to it? Or maybe I can somehow save one geometric object (leaf itself) as paint effects brush?

there is the paint script tool, i think from memory its under Modify>Paint Attribute or something then you can load your script and paint that. Sure that should work. Check the help file for advice on how to use it.

Several options, I would go for PaintFX since it will be way more memory efficient than using geometry for the leaves.

If you don't need to much motion on individual leave you could go for a geometry (softbody) approach combined with texture and transparency maps. There is a very nice example of that on www.rustboy.com have a look in the 'Making of' section.

Further more there are some plugins which might be usefull:
NatFX: http://www.bionatics.com/
Xfrog: www.greenworks.de

Cheers!

On HighEnd3D you will find a MEL script called "scatterObject" (by Javier Solsona) which will take one object, and scatter it around a second, sticking it to the surface, but you can still move it around the surface.
