Hi there,

I'm looking into making a model reel and i'm a little unsure what type of characters to stay clear from. I've heard industry profs say that cars and woman with big boobs and swords are a turn off and a no go, but what others should be avoided?

I am looking to do a character reel of a human. I'm not sure what style of character to choose from that hasn't been done several times over. I'm thinking to stay clear from the fantasy RPG style characters as well. What are your opinions?

I just don't want to do something dull.

Don't include anybody's copy-written characters. That's a big no-no.

i'd say do whatever you want. cliche's exist because, despite what we'd like to think, we like them. It's the sense of familiarity and believability- the more times you see an orc, the more you accept the idea of an orc.

although I would augment that by saying- if you're going to do a cliche, you've got to do it really well. The whole point of a demo reel is to try and stand out apart from the crowd (in a good way). If you do an orc or female warrior with big boobs, you've got a lot of competition right from the start, and if your work doesn't surpass them in a major way, it could just get lost in the pile.

Personally, I like cliches (guilty of several myself), just know that if you go down that road, it may be an uphill battle.
