View Full Version : Enchanted forest - Environment/Character - .::STRIKE::.
rolhionjs 05-21-2002, 05:40 PM well, here's my entry for this month challenge :)
I'm gonna test some lights effects first, here's two trees with a procedural, and some sasquatch. I took one of my bonsai for the tree model reference :) .

that's a pretty nice pic! Only I don't like the background... it's too "Fake" If u know what i mean.... u can see easaly that it's put behind your scene.
:: Error
nice to see you on this one to ,good start but the background effectivly look fake ,keep it up and good luck
rolhionjs
05-22-2002, 08:16 AM
Yeah you were right for the background, so how about this one ?
Well i add a main tree on the first plan on the left, but i have to add details like vegetals and this kind around. The main idea is to put my future character near the main tree.

Hmmmm... texture and colour-wise it's looking cool, but...
...those volumetric beams don't seam to match up to the actual physical environment :surprised
I find the best (and quickest way) to get your volumetric pass out, is to make a scene with plain black matte versions of all your objects, and then just render the light out of that scene, and composite that pass over the normal render (using the Screen blending mode in Photoshop works perfectly ;)).
This not only saves loads of rendering time, but also allows you far greater control over the intensity of the volumetric beams.
rolhionjs
05-22-2002, 05:26 PM
I don't know if i understood everything, but if i put this light in compositing after doing what you say, then i'll be not able to animate later correctly no ? But it's maybe my bad english that causes this misunderstood ... Anyway, in fact in the scene i have two lights : the volumetric one, (sure it's long to render) and a front spot light i just cleared on this last render :
http://www.designpicture.com/images3Dversion/arbreessai5.jpg
So when i deleted this one then shadows are too dark near the main tree i think... no ?
but if the problem came from the beams, then i can reduce intensity of the procedural maybe... hummm... in fact i don't really understand... If someone could translate i would help me alot :)
Anyway, thx Leigh for your advices.

I wish good luck to you...

05-22-2002, 05:39 PM
Actually I prefer the contrast now that the spot is gone. I would keep it like this! It's got more mood now....
As for the volumetrics...
Ummm...I don't speak French, so let me explain it more simply:
Take the volumetric light out of your scene. Render it, and save your render.
Make copies of all your objects and make all their surfaces completely black. With no specularity or anything. Just plain black. Then save your scene with a new name, and replace all the current objects with the black ones.
Then set up your volumetric light to shine through the objects.
Now, render your scene out. This will render faster because their are no image maps, and colour info to slow the render process down.
Save your render and then take it into Photoshop, and place it over the normal render (the one without the volumetric light), using the Screen blending mode.
If you are planning to animate it, then just render everything out as sequences of 32-bit Targa files - that way you can composite them in After Effects, or Combustion, or whatever.
Does this make more sense???
:)
rolhionjs
05-22-2002, 05:45 PM
wow yeah Leigh : a perfect explanation :) thx alot for this great tutorial :)
I'm gonna try this, and after that i just start my character.. :)
Thx elfe noir ! :)

Leigh, thanks a ton, you've just made my life easier. Volumetrics take waaay too long to render

Strike: beutiful composition I really like your enviroment's design. I just would like to suggest one thing. Since you have that one tree which is right in the forground of you picture I would recomend putting a lot of detail into the textures on it. It looks OK now, but you can still see some of the pollygon edges, and the texture looks really flat. Just my humble opinion, it looks really great otherwise.

05-23-2002, 01:26 PM
HOW in the world do you make those environments so fast?
And they look so photo realitic?
I don't have much coment except that the light is really low.
It makes it quite mysterious but less natural. and it is really bright. Maybe if you made the light more dim (< I mean more spread and less bright, Don't know if this is the tight name (DIM)) so you can see the mist (<-- clouds hanging on the ground, what are the called?)
Great going:cool: :wavey:
rolhionjs
05-23-2002, 01:37 PM
yeah you're right, maybe i should reduce intensity of this light :) the clouds on the ground ? fog no ? Thx for the constructive comment Iguiniz.X. :)

WAOAW !!!!

I'm not sure that the lighting on the characters is right though - they don't seem to blend in properly...
rolhionjs
05-28-2002, 12:32 AM
well after many test of scene, i think this angle of view will be the best. I finally decided to delete my procedural, and having a panoramic view.
Next step : better texturing and modeling details like mushrooms, jacket of the two Squizzo and i'll see :)
here's the update :
http://www.designpicture.com/images3Dversion/arbreessai94.jpg
I have to say - that if you combined the two images... it would be a really nice composition.
The closeness of the characters is nice - and the ability to see more surroundings is also nice. The darkness/contrast is also better (IMHO) in the one you had before - especially the green in the image.
But it's coming along far too quickly for my liking - Slow down! ;) :D

Great looking
I feel your last post, overall looks nice, but the one before it, had sooo much more depth and feeling to it that the last one seems to have lost. If you could somehow combine the two I feel you are on to something great. Just my opinion. The 2nd before last one I was like wow, then I felt a little let down by the way the last one looked. The sharp contrast between light and dark and the depth from the lighting I think really raised the bar of the image
Keep it up

rolhionjs
05-28-2002, 12:11 PM
hey thanks ! :)
In fact i just add a low procedural behind the characters and higher than the old one... it doesn't seem to change alot but by puting more intensity in the front light, it changed suprisely the whole scene by just transforming this one in a area light :) :)
The grass is done with sasquatch for lightwave :) And finally i added more blur to 45 % for the back :)
rolhionjs
05-28-2002, 05:20 PM
another test but i'm not sure of the result
This time i cleared procedural, i added fog and put less intensity of the main front light

I think I like the darker version (the one before this image)
Aearon
05-28-2002, 06:14 PM
yeah, the lighting on the one before was the best, what i don't like about it is the light from the front left, it produces way too harsh shadows, what's supposed to be the source of that ?
MBUUN
05-28-2002, 06:20 PM
I really like that character. The forest is looking very realistic, too. Lighting is one of the things I wanted to concentrate on as well, so I was paying attention to your lighting which is coming along great. Do you plan to have any type of shadow map simulating the suns rays shining through the foliage on the tree and/or characters? That's about all I could suggest, otherwise it's great. :applause:
ZrO-1
05-28-2002, 08:43 PM
Here's a suggestion you could try with the lighting Strike:
Try placing a greenish ambient type light directly overhead and set it at a low intensity. That might help soften the shadows a bit as well as suggest filtered light coming in from above the tree canopy.
BTW, your textures are absolutely awesome (as always ;) ). I really like the plants you have for ground cover also.
rolhionjs
05-29-2002, 11:52 AM
well... i begin to be tired of these lightning tests... I don't find the good parameters... :(
I tryed to take all your comments for this last image, but i have a problem with a shadow map from the left. In fact i don't know how must be the image map... Color, form, format to make it in photoshop... Can someone help ?
Thanks to all of you for all your positive comments :)
http://www.designpicture.com/images3Dversion/arbreessai98.jpg
rolhionjs
05-29-2002, 02:43 PM
As i already said, i begin to get mad of these lightning parameters... so here is a new image of a model i'm gonna put into the scene. In fact i'm gonna give the final scene, a very large view of what it will be. Right to the actual scene i'm gonna add this kinda lizard (a wamapa :) ) being attack by the main warrior of the clan, the two others just looking to the fight.
So technically, as i find a good way for realistic light on this last image, i'm gonna make differently and totally the actual scene. I have to re-build all my scene with those parameters... And it's gonna be long...
About this model : a simple monster named wamapa :)

Stike....I dont know exactly what it is, but I absolutly love your work:thumbsup:
Theres a roughness to it, a sorta grunge that most ppl miss, and it really makes this stand out from alot of others. This holds nice and true to our last entry.
Keep it up Strike:applause:
