this is the start of larger project that I've got in mind, something I can keep adding to, robots kick ass, don't care if you're tired of em, theres more where this came from :D

which eye setup do you prefer?

You are the robot God! I like the two-eyed droid.

This time a little more realistic. I like it very much.
How about a thumb for the poor robo ? And I like
the single eyed robo better.

Tired of them? I think not. 2 eyes does it for me. -- 3d_e

Really love the style Squid,

I would like to see the two eyes vertical, but for now one eye does it for me. Both the Orange and Blue coloring works well with this one. How long did this one take you (inc. Texturing)?

Very cool.
I prefer the one eye with this one.
I actually like the 2 eyes in and of themselves but they seem very crowded in the frame of the head, as well as too small.

One eye is better, but perhaps with a few very small eyes around it (insect style) so that he can have some depth perception. Love the bots!!

Great stuff, I've got to admit (while trying not to sound too suck up-ish) that I look forward to see each new piece of work you turn out.

As always they look great, I've got to go with the majority though and say that the one eyed one looks best at the moment.

Most Exellent as usual, (1 eye) has my vote.

Hey with all your robots/aliens/spaceships/mechs and so forth you would be able to make an awsome composite battle sceen. Holding out for that :)

Cool, can't quite say why but I quite like the one with 2 eyes, somehow has a bit more character I feel.

Single eyed ;)

i like it single eyed!
but maybe with two (or more) asymetrical that could be great as well.

I wish you'd post a tut about your textures one time; they're really brilliant!

Excellent textures! Oh, and I'd like to see it with one small orange eye, and a big blue one, asymmetrically placed :D

I like both but two eyes have a greater scope for creating character and emotion.....if thats what you want in a robot?

Single because its a robot and you seem to going for more of a non bi pedal type of look.If you use 2 eyes people will expect human like behavior as thats what the eyes will remind them of :)

Put two eyes (for central vision) and smaller ones around for peripheral vison! And yeah, give the guy the thumbs or else he won't be doing much!

Unless he is supposed not to do much :D

squidinc

in my "plan" this guy is going to be a sort of data input droid, lot's of typing on control pads, so not really a lot of use for thumbs, but I might add them anyway so he can go for a drink at the bar, which will have some other interesting inhabitants ;)

eh eh  but donīt forget those peripheral vision eyes, so that he can have his eyes on the beer, while checking the periphery for robot-chicks

defintiely prefer the one-eyed model--makes him seem more like an appliance, and less c3p0-ish.

love the metal texture. is that all procedural, or did you paint the grunge map?

squidinc

textures are procedural, dirtynuts plugin for the grunginess

With one eye its more "mechcanical" (if that even makes sense) where as with two eyes it starts to become more "human".
I like the first one (but I'm not a fan of the blue color).
Excellent work as usual.

Hi Squidinc,

I always try to figure out how you get this strong look.
I mean your pictures have something besides the modeling
that I can't explain. How do you get these strong colors
and contrasts ? Please teach an unworthy :)

one eye makes it look more balanced.

two just seems odd.

well mike, i think...and this is just an observation: The one eyed droid loks like an older model...and the 2 eyed looks like a new model, do you think it would work out to maybe put both in the scene, and make the one eyed model look dingy, and make the 2 eyed model shiny, and new? Just a suggestion, i think you could marvelously capture this aspect...so yup, im done :)

I'm torn, both set-ups look very good. I can't wait to see an update on this.

I do quite a lot of colour adjusting in photoshop afterwards, I don't think I've ever posted something that's straight from C4D, I tend to mess about with the levels to get the right contrast, other times I just hit autolevels and that's it :), the "unsharp mask" is good for making the image sharper too

Squid, are you using HDR lightning?

I'm using a HDR file, but only in the environment channel of the metal texture, it kind of looks the same as when you use it on a sky object with radiosity, this just renders quicker
