View Full Version : diffuse material bake?
Testure 02-19-2010, 04:04 PM In 3dsmax, a feature I always enjoyed having was the diffuse material bake- where I could take my high poly mesh's material color and bake it down to my low poly game model's UV space. It makes for easier selection once you're in photoshop working on textures because you can quickly create masks for metal/wood/whatever.
I've been searching for a way to do this in modo, but so far have been unsuccessful. Any ideas?

Yes this can be done in modo.
You will use the "Bake from Object to Render Outputs" found in the Render menu. This tool will take the currently selected mesh and UV map and back whatever render pass you specify to a map the size of your render resolution. It is a bit of a convoluted workflow, but once you get it, it works great.
First, select your low poly mesh.
Select the UV Map you want to bake onto (found in Lists>UVMaps).
Next in the Shader Tree, change your render resolution to the map size you want (512X512, 1024X1024 etc).
Right click on the effect for Final Color Output Render output item and choose "Diffuse Coefficient Output". By default the gamma is set to 1.6 in properties, I like to change it to 1.
Now you can go to menu>Bake from Object to Render Outputs. You will be asked for a distance, enter a distance corresponding to the size of your mesh and hit OK.
You should see your high resolution textured object being baked to your low resolution UV's.
Once it's done rendering, save your image and you are done.
You can also bake ambient occlusion and a bunch of other maps this way.
One problem I encountered a lot early on was having my UV maps for the high resolution and the low resolution named the same. modo would get confused and give me a messed up output. So if that happens, just rename one of your UV maps.
I hope that helps.
