View Full Version : Just rendered out the first shot of my film...
wedge 05-21-2002, 04:05 PM ...but I rendered it as name.ext.# instead of name.#.ext
Now I have a folder full of 360 images called "Stadium.tif.001", "Stadium.tif.002", "Stadium.tif.003", and so on and so forth.
How can I string these together? And is it going to be a problem that I rendered out with the # at the end? I can open the frames in Photoshop if I delete the # at the end, but not with. How do I convert these single frames into an animation? Please don't tell me I have to rename each one Stadium.001.tif.....
P.S. I usually render things out as .avi, but I heard rendering as single images is higher quality.

No, you're totally fine with the incremented numbers at the end. In fact, if you know you'll end up passing 1000 frames in one shot (unlikely), you'll probably want to add 4 digits to the frame number.
To put it into one movie file, you'll need to bring it into a program like After Effects or Premiere. I'm sure there are free or less expensive programs out there to convert from TIF sequence to AVI, but I don't know where they are.

I have both Premiere and After Effects.... but I don't know how to utilize frames with .001 or .360 at the end of them.

OK, we'll use Premiere as an example, but AE is similar.
Create a new project in Premiere or open up one you've created for your shots.
Next, select File|Import|File...
Find your TIF images. Pick one of them. A selection box should appear with the words "Image Sequence" or something like that -- I'm using Premiere 6, so 5 might be a bit difference.
Anyway, when you tell Premiere that it's an image sequence, it'll go out and find all of your files in that directory that begin with YOUR_FILE_NAME and end with #### (some sequence of numbers). Check the Image Sequence box, press OK, and you're good to go. Then drop the sequence onto your timeline.
Then go to File|Export Timeline|Movie. You'll be able to select which codec you use by clicking on the Settings box which should be at the bottom of your file dialogue.
Anyway, that's it. If there are any questions, Check Premiere or AE help files. They're pretty good.

in Premiere, I can't import a file that ends with the file #... but I renamed the first image Stadium.001.tif, and it works fine... is there a way to to a "batch-rename" so I don't have to manually rename the images?

a quick peek into the Premiere 6 manual has shown me that on Windows I need to have the frames rendered as Filename.001.tif.... so... here I go, renaming all 360 frames... I'm going to keep doing this until someone tells me a method of how to automatically rename frames.

well, at least the animation looks good... i just watched it in Fcheck...
EDIT: hey, wow!! Fcheck loads the whole animation, and then I can RE-SAVE each frame of the movie! No need to do it manually! Hooray to Fcheck!

To re-pad a number of files I use "Rename It". I found that tool years ago on www.highend3d.com.
It works wonderfully.

I usually just use Quicktime and Open Image Sequence. It's only with Quicktime Pro ($30). After you open it you can compress it and then put it up it for all of us to see:thumbsup:

Never really spent much time with it, but now I find Fcheck to be one of the most useful gadgets in the Maya package!
Will post images/animations soon!!

Well, the animation stage is beginning.... so I guess I've moved from Pre-production to Production.... I'm rendering shot 002 right now.
I've started rendering out my animations as single frames and I'm addicted! You don't get interlacing problems or any of the other problems that go with animations. You just get individual frames at a much higher quality. I'm hooked. Goodbye AVI.
Here are a few shots.

And another...
NOTE: I would work much harder on the texturing and the terrain if I had more time. My finished movie is due in 2 weeks or I don't graduate!

The frames are looking good, Brian (or do you prefer Will?).
I can't wait to see some of it animated.

You can all call me Brian. It's not actually my name, though... It's just what all people call me.
I updated my site with pictures of my "studio"...
EDIT: By the way, this shot is lit using GI_Joe and a point light (positioned in a galaxy far, far away). I used GI_Joe to get the lighting underneath, as well as areas in the shade. I used the point light to act as the sun. The point light has some yellow in it. All in all there are 33 lights in this scene.
Thanks to Emmanuel Campin for GI_Joe, and thanks to Awakener for suggesting the yellow in the lights. Thanks to everyone for helping me out!
