I am trying to make my first animation with 3ds max. It will be a dogfight scene from ww2.

What should be the right setup for lighting a "sky, some clouds and sea below" scene?

I am thinking about using Mental rays sky+sun to light to scene (heard mental is better than vray for animation? ) and maybe link some omni lights as ambient or illuminate dark areas on planes.
I can rig every plane in the scene with a different light setup but it will take ages to render.

Is it a logical approach to use 1 light, or should i have to make lightning setup for every plane?
As planes will dive, turn and generally roll around, i think 1 light source, like sun, should do the trick, but i am not sure? Should i be better of to use a strong omni instead of the "sun"

I looked around in internet and couldn't find decent info for lightning in animations.
Any info is appreciated.

Thanx..

Well this is a pretty broad question/topic. But I think I would probably start with occlusion for the indirect and a MR sun/MR area spot for the sun. You could have the AO shader sample the environment for color as well. I dont suggest this because it is the best or only way to do it. It is just where I would start. Good luck.

Mike

BTW, I would not say that Vray is worse for animation than MR. It is all about your personal preference/workflow. Vray is an excellent renderer. I personally prefer MR, but because it fits me better, not because MR is better.

You could have the AO shader sample the environment for color as well.

Wouldn't that introduce flickering in the animation? Because it is the same principle as with FG... stochastic sampling. So you will get slight differences in each frame... which will lead to flickering?! The only way to avoid this would be to set the samples so high you won't see it any more?! Or am I totally wrong here?

For flickering issue, someone mentioned to use FGM Map.
Don't know what it is yet, but have to check it out..

This is what you need - REGARDLESS of what main software app you use.
