View Full Version : Phantom lights
TheWriter 09-01-2003, 06:47 PM I have not added any lights to my scene, yet I see that it has a habbit of showing up when I do my renders. I have checked the default lights, and the checkbox is off. So shouldn't I get a black scene when I render? To top it off, if I visualize in renderware, I still see a lighted area, even when I turn off the main light & ambient toggles.
I have not been using lightmaps.. (I dont think!)

how about CREATING a light and then turn THAT one of . . . ?
does that help ?
i think max ALWAYS uses default lights and they can't be turned of.
never tried to turn them of so i'm not sure about that last statement and i don't have max here os i can't try it/.

there has to be something emitting light in a scene. If you don't add any lights MAX will automatically add one (or two)
If you had no lights then you wouldn't see anything in the render.
To see what I mean do what EQ said. Make a light and then turn it off. Render, and nadda... all black.

I was just playing with Light Tracer, and, in my scene, lights turned off still emit a bit of light. That is, my backfill light was still backlighting my model just a tad even though it was turned off. As soon as I deleted it, I got black in all the right places.
I don't know what to chaulk it up to just yet as I haven't done much fiddling with it to narrow down the problem. Weird.

Grrr. It seems as soon as I delete the newly added lights... max's crappy defaults re-take over on me again.

if you make a new light and delete it then you get no light so max will switch to the default one(s) ... you have to create a light and turn it off (not delete) to get absolutely no light
