Pretty much it's good but there are things they still have to improve: displacement, AA, and Dof. GI is pretty quick and hyper GI is fast and produce good results for animations w/o flickering.

Not to forget: FR works nice with shag:Hair,
Darktree,Dreamscape,Shave ..

But there is MTD in fR stage 1... Micro Triangle Displacement. I tested it and I'm quite pleased to results. Yeps, GI is fast and results look good. But I have some problems with caustics, maybe its just me doing something wrong but they were bit too blurry.

Did you tried to reduce caustics radius and put more photons ?

IMHO finalrender's caustics is pretty sharp and quick considering you can render millions of PHOtons.

fr stage 1 base core is pretty good step into the next evolution of renderers, but it is first 1.0 version is bug as hell :( almost all features are very raw :( Hyper GI is shit :( Shag hair doesnt work for me with a good AA/speed rendering results :( AA is very slow, it mars all other speed-ups...
Vray does almost the same things in few times faster and better ;) And... new version releases almost "every day" :) All new bugs will fixed after u will find them ;)
Cebas keeping mum... they didnt even say that fr stage 1 have critical errors, and didnt say about next SP or fix yet :( and its after almost 1.5 years of waiting... i doubt that next Service pack will fix all features and change a shit into the gold :( who knows, you can wait 1.5 years more... if you have a time for this.
