In LW its nice that you can see symetry being updated. Is there a way of seeing that in Maya? I've tried an instanced object but when I use my subD toggle script the instance dissapears...

I don't know exactly what your script does or what the goal of your Subd Toggle Script is, but I suppose you want to show-hide your poly cage / Subdivision shape?
If that is the case you can place your polyToSubdShap1HistPoly-node (polycage) and polyToSubdShape1-node (actual Subd-Shape) in different layers. (select the nodes in the Hypergraph windows)
To instance an object: edit > duplicate (that little square thingy to open the command option dialog) Geometry Type > Instance. Also use the appropriate Translate and Scale options to mirror your half object. But you knew that already, just wanted to give a complete answer.

I hope this helps.

note: Switching from Subd Poly mode to Normal mode back to Poly mode destroys the layer setup.

Yeah thanks Tomd. What I would really like to know is if there is a way of actuallu seeing your changes to a model on the mirrored half - like when u hit 'Y' in LW. I have previously tried instancing an object but its not really suitable

Not essential for my productivity but it would help - would just save me having to cut the model in half and mirroring again to se the changes!

Aaah, now I get it. :) I didn't know LW could do this automatically.
Sorry I don't know if maya could do this as quick as LW, anyone, some suggestions?

It can, albeit not with a 1 button solution.

Duplicate your model, with duplicate option set to instance (make sure the pivot point is where you want it to mirror).
Then, scale the instance -1 on the axis you want.

Edit to your heart's content.

If you read my original post I say there that I cant use a mirrored instance due to the Subd toggle script I am using.

Nevermind, I dont think there is an easy solution to it, I'll just do it the long way round for the time being...

The way I'm finding it...its just go ahead and combine then smooth then check it out ctrl-z back until you get going on the lowpoly version again and keep chugging along...

Yeah that kind of sucks tho. I'm using the toggle subd script so I dont have to hit undo everytime I smooth, so that method kind of defeats the object!
