I am using Maya 4.5 Complete on Mac.

I have built have of my model... Now I simply want to mirror it and have it be all 1 skin (therefore merging the verticies that lie on the zero X axis)

When I Polygon -> Mirror Geometry (-X) .... it doesn't seem to make a difference if I "Merge With The Original" and select either "Merge Verticies" or "Connect Border Edges".... either way, it mirrors the geometry (and combines), but I end up with duplicate verticies that are on the zero X axis.

... it doesn't seem to "Merge Verticies" or "Connect Border Edges" as selected.... Am I doing something wrong?

Snap to grid those verts that are close to the exact axis that you are mirroring to but in the Move Tool options uncheck Retain Component Spacing so that your verts are snapping right on that axis/grid location....then Mirror and select merge with orginal and merge verts.....
It worked here....

When you do a mirror (with merge verts. ) you end up with history like this:

INPUTS
polyNormal1
polyMergeVert1
polyChipOff1

Click on "polyMergeVert1", in the "Distance" box type in something small like 0.01. This should fix the merge.
