In a project I am involved in a friend has modelled and animated a Maya scene using Pixar/MTOR (Maya to RenderMan) subdivision surfaces. However, due to unforeseen events, it is now up to me to render this scene in a Maya without MTOR.

The question is: is there any way to convert the objects (and possibly also the animation) to polygons/subdivs to be rendered using Maya software renderer or mental ray?

MTOR subdivs are just a rendertime conversion, so the object in maya will still just be the base poly mesh. Using either polysmooth or Maya subdivs on this will get you a pretty close result to the PRMan version (although not as fast of course).

Thanks for the reply. Trouble is that there is a lot of creases and nondefault "corner hardness", so smoothing the polygon will at best give (as you wrote) an approximate result.
