~60 min., GIMP

hello all, I am still relatively new to posting on these forums, but I visit the daily sketch forum quite often just to see the ideas people come up with for each topic. it is always an inspiration to witness the work you guys do.

I tried to be quick with my attempt for this one, but still went a bit over time. the last 15 minutes was mostly spent adjusting colors and such. hopefully with practice I can improve my speed.

nucron, wellcome to the community!!

I just can't watch your picture being so dark, dull and dirty - so i've made up a little paintover. See how adding a color to the shadows make the image live. And i've highlighted bright areas also. I hope you not offended and i have helped you.

Great image though.

Advarsky: thank you for the welcome! and thank you for the paint-over, as well. I really do appreciate the advice. I agree that the painting looks much better when it is brightened up. actually, I did try playing with the levels and curves before uploading, but I guess just because of where the lighter colors are it looked like bright sunlight was streaming in through the roof, which was actually pretty cool, but I felt like it somehow made it more "hopeful," if that makes sense. and I wasn't sure if that fit with the theme of the "dark celebration."

but your suggestions here are sound. it's easy to see what you mean about adding brighter highlights and varying colors to help make the shadowy areas more interesting. I will definitely keep these things in mind for the future. thanks, again!

I liked Nucron's painting in its original state more. It is dark and dirty looking but the title is dark celebration so it is fitting for this piece. The paint over looked like very bright daytime and not dark at all. And I really, really am not stating this to start any sort of trouble but I personally found it a bit rude to do a paint over without first asking. A seasoned artist doing a paint over with permission can be a ton of help for someone starting out but I just think it nice to ask first. It would have been good enough to suggest adding a color to the shadows as a tip without painting over his artwork. And I'm not saying you meant it to be rude, I'm sure you did not.
