View Full Version : Exporting models and animations
ksanim 09-01-2003, 07:00 AM Does 3D studio have the built-in capability to export models and animations into a format used by game engines such as QuakeIII or Genesis3D? If not, can I find plugins for the educational version that will perform these tasks.
Thanks.

generally speaking: yes
specifically speaking: it depends on the game engine mostly. alot of the big engines (unreal 2003 engine for example) will accept models in a format 3dsmax can export (or rather unreal editor will accept those models)
in the little bit of game stuff i have done, i've only had to export to ascii txt format and to .ase format
so unless your game engine wants something wierd then you should be able to export to it. and for those things you can't export with stock max, the game community generally has produced a max plugin or convertor for it (like i think there is an .md3 exporter plugin for max)
u just gotta dig around a bit to find em :)

Thanks for the reply, I have a couple other questions.
What is an example of an animation format 3D Studio would export?
What game engines aside from Unreal are these animation formats compatible with?
Where can I download the Unreal engine from?

hehe..dont bother looking for a download of the engine without buyinhg the game<especially the unreal engine>..half life .smd exports bones and animation.but you need ot look on the net and download the exporter...and the .ase format is the best!! it exports everything and alot of engines support .ase to bring models form max in...also look into direct x format..as far as modding game levels and models..the original .unreal tournement is 5 bucks american ,used, and it has unreal ed..half life is cheap too..:) and gtk radaint <quake 3 modding> is free to download but you need at least one game that uses the quake 3 engine..
