Alrights, my comments/critiques as requested.

1. The green water at the beginning with all the clouds doesn't match the blue water in the next shot. You should try to match the colors a bit more. I prefer the blue, but that's up to you.

2. Durring the underwater shot, you can see light rays penetrating the water. I like this, but I would almost expect to see the same light rays through the clouds at the beginning. This is probably just a personal preference, but it kind of stands out to me.

3. When Gawk, sees the fish, he seems like he is calm. At first he is startled, but then it doesn't seem to affect him. I would think that he would be pretty freaked out byt the monsterous fish comming at him. and would be moving around a lot more... Maybe some facial expressions too.

Looks great. I hope my next VFX project can stand up next to yours man.

Hey man,

Nice stuff! I really like the credits and presentation - very professional. I especially like the opening flythrough, reminded me of some of the big-budget disaster flicks.

Overall, quite a strong reel, I'm impressed.

ah, ji, the new sound fx rule! my congratulations to your friend. i'm also sorry that the text didn't really make it through the divx filter. maybe if you get a chance, you cuold re-render a web version with different fonts. anyhow, fantastic work!

the only critique right now is when the alien guys meets fish he looks like he is not really surprised. i think he could have been shocked little bit more. i always found exagerated animation interesting unless you're going for realistic style. i dunno man^^

anyhow..i love your reel especially the way you set up. presentation is pretty strong and proffesional. that's it for me!! right on man~!!

Do they make you put their logo or credit at the beginning of all student reels?

Is it manditory? or do you do it out of respect and thanks?

the weather from middle of September to March is gonna be super-bad.
raining all the time...rain rain rain rain....
you can really focus on your stuff if you come up here during that season.

When I saw the image - I was amused a bit - but it was untill I saw demo reel - I wouldn't say that I don't like it - cuz lotta work there was done - but there is small things all around that won't satisfy me - lik when submarine appears - the shot is too fast I guess - when it flys by the camera...
When there is submarine and large fish in shot - both look like there is no motion as particles and dirrect motion of both-fish and submarine - nothing dynamic...I saw this movie one time - and it was enough to see some bugs - that's not so good - but as FX - yepp - underwater scenes - U're good on them - definetly! Even submarine is pretty good!:D

i totally agree with everything you pointed out here.
flying-by shot at the beginning seems to be fast, i guess.
and my final shot which has sub and fish has tons of things that i would
have improved.

that was my first demo reel so, i hope my skillset is getting better next time.

wow..class 40!!...cant believe it..and so many new amazing reels....things must be pretty tight down in Vancouver....job wise... btw. I was in calss31....

Hey Ji...thanks for those comments...because...I am a designer... :p

About the credit for VFS....They are mandatory because we are using the school facilities...and most important...educational licences for all the software. So the school must stay as a school with STUDENTS projects to the eyes of the world (festivals, websites, etc)...if not ... it would be in a lot of trouble...

just watched it, ...pretty interesting stuff...love the visuals and the way everything was layered, the models, shadows, lights, particles....giving full control of the composition. NICE!..

I finally got to watch it. It's pretty neat. The alian's movements are a bit limited, but that might be a species thing. I love the ship/sub. The ending is pretty funny, especially contrasted with the title.

But this is a VFX reel so...

Love the effects. The water, the trail of bubbles following the ship - everything goes well toghether. Congrats on a nice setup. Looking forward to the next one.

i'm surprised you got the story :D !!
cuz...in production stage i used to have 14 shots but, had to take out 10 shots out of 14 to make my reel way better in terms of overall quality. that's why i kinda gave up the story.
i'm so glad you got the story out of only 4 shots!!! :cool: and you loved my effects!!
