View Full Version : The Gearinator
peachstapler 09-01-2003, 06:17 AM When I began this project, my goal was to model a giant, cumbersome basement-of-a-factory type of machine. Here is a work-in-progress; modeled in 3dsmax, textured in Photoshop:

Technical notes:
130,000 polys
largest map = 1024x1024
yes, this is the same machine seen on the somethingawful.com forums, nicknamed among other things, 'The Gearinator 5000 Mark II Turbo Extreme Championship Edition'.

'The Gearinator 5000 Mark II Turbo Extreme Championship Edition'
Thats funny man.
Hey looking good there...but something seems off...I cant put my finger on it but I think the lighting is making it look small...that and the textures are so big, covering so much space...that they are making it look small....
Cool looking textures but they seem too large making your model look small.
Wanna see more of this though.Keep us updated!

i agree with wgreenlee1 , it's cool! You may spend a little more on lighting the scene (some shadows would push forward the ambiance).
Hope to see more soon!

There is somthing wrong with it. The main body of the machine is too clean and bright. Against the floor there is too large of a contrast.... it might just be me tho with my bad eyes. I agree with the other guys too, there should be some scaling of the textures. I myself should be the last person talking about texturing... but I do agree witht hem

I was actually going for a different type of metal, and slightly less corrosive than the metal on the gears and pipes. However, I will reduce the maps by half and re-render.

I agree with the above mentioned lighting and texturing crits that have already been made.
I'd like to see some sort of reference to scale in the shot...just something to show how large or small the Gearinator really is. Something like a guardrail or access hatches to give us a "human is this large" reference.
just my 2¢...probably just too much lotr:fotr SE dvd

Good idea! I never really thought about, "Maybe ladders or a control panel should go in here?" to give it a scence of scale. My intentions were to make the green base part of the machine around 8-10 feet high.
Hope that helps! :)

Two things I think would help concerning the above suggestions...
The main body of the thing has some rust spots up high, but the bottom portion, where it meets the floor is very clean. Dirty it up near the floor, especially around the brackets that connect it to the floor.
On the size issue, try a shorter focal length on the camera, and get the camera right down near(not on) the ground. That will set it in a perspective that should make it appear quite a bit larger.
That's just my $.02

You're absolutely right Electrofirma, there should be rust around the brackets near the ground and possibly around the pipes that sprout from the ground into the base. Additionally, I'm going to dirty-up the base so that it is influenced by the color of the ground.
I am taking Wintermute's advice and adding a step-ladder on the left-hand side to give the viewer a better idea of the machine's size.

The pipes going into that thing ... they seem dirty, but well, they seem to be dirty in a too "clean" way... like they should be maybe more dirtier on the lower side as water tends to run down and collect on the lower side of the pipe slowly dripping down leaving some more corrosion there.
And at the places where the pipes touch the big machine, you could make some more corrosion.
(sorry, my english is rather lame today...)
