Hi guys!

At the 2009 Blender Conference I presented a tutorial on how to use the new smoke simulator. Ever since then I've wanted to put the smoke simulator to the ultimate test. So I've spent the last 3 months using it in a production pipeline to see how it would perform in a complex scene.

I chose to visualize New York city after a distasterous earthquake.

The city is a camera mapped photo, but everything else is 3d.

Wow, never would have done something like this myself. i really liek how the music gets louder when the building falls down :) and also the smoke is really well done O:

Thanks guys! I realized about halfway through the project that it was a bit ambitious and I nearly gave up. But it worked out in the end :)

That looks really good. Nice job! My only concern is the distance buildings on fire, the smoke feels out of place. As if it should look thicker. But still good work. :)

Hey that was pretty sweet! Nice work. I think the lighting/rendering needs another pass, but I realize that wasn't the purpose of this. The smoke looked nice in the foreground. When it was close up it was good. I don't think it was quite as successful in the distance because it still seemed the same scale as the smoke in the foreground. I think that if it was scaled down a lot and it's features were much smaller, then it would be more convincing that it was that far away. Overall though it was nifty. I really liked the way you revealed the whole scene, that was pretty creative!
