First off, I did perform a search, spent about 30 minutes looking for an answer. ANd since I only have 5 hours of internet time left this month, I decided to stop looking and just ask. :)

Ok, I have a rectangle shape. I have an animation that is 260 frames long. I set the rotation for all the axises to 0 at frame 1, and then at the end of the animation, and frame 260, I set the x and y axis rotation to 1,000 and leave z at 0. So we have:

FRAME 1:

x rotation: 0
y rotation: 0
z rotation: 0

FRAME 2:

x rotation: 1000
y rotation: 1000
z rotation: 0

The problem:

Ok, the figure does not rotate in a consitent, predictable direction. It has this kind of diagonal zing-zang feel to it, if you get my meaning. From what I can tell this is because when I rotate, the rotation axis change too. I.E., the rotation axises no longer match the movent axises. I think if I could somehow lock the rotation axises so that only the shape rotates (and the axises don't move with it) the problem would be fixed. However I can't figure out how to do this.

Thank you for your time. I hope I have worded my question in an easy to read and to understand fashion. If you do not understand do not hesitate to say so. I will reword my question if necessary!

Thank you!

It's probably just a case of Maya trying to interpret what you want, and getting it wrong. Just go into the Graph Editor with the object selected, and make sure that both rotations you plotted are straight.

Also if its Free internet access you need, Use Netzero (http://netzero.com). I never had a problem with it.

They are straight, I looked to make sure. The only thing that seems to be causing this is that the axises are switching. The lines are completely straight.....

Yeah, it is that the axis directions are changing. I went into attributes to display and told it to display local handle and it swirling about like it doesn't know which way to point......

Any ideas?

I did think I understood your question correctly. I really don't think there's a way to "lock" the axies(sp?) down and get the look you are going for. If you look under channel control I know there is quite a bunch of other things that are keyable possibilities. You can also lock things there as well. Browse through there and see if anything works. And let me know if it's possible. I'm always happy to be wrong!

Well, I'm unsure of what to do. I thought of perhaps using a mathamtical formula to "convert" the rotation from a virtual fixed axis (pivot point?) to the real one. I am unsure of how to do that, though I will continue to expermiment. Being only in 10 grade does put a hamper on your math skills......

Well if you have 10th grade math then you are doing much better than I....:wip:

If you said that your axis are rotating (in relation to eachother) then what I believe you are encountering is Gimbal Lock... go into your objects attributes and change the rotation order to something that works (it all depends on whats rotating)

I've tried that too. WHat happens is that since its rotating to directions at once the pivot (found out that's what the actual name is) rotates when I rotate. That changes the pivot so it no longer matches (direction wise) to the world pivot, so it no longer rotating according the the world pivot. Does that make sense?
