hey anyone that's familiar will know that this is manji from hiroaki samura's blade of the immortal, he's unfinished and it's my first model ever in maya, there are some issues im already aware of, his ears are alittle awkward and his neck needs to be worked on but that's all the work im doing for today , check it out

one of the best comics ever written. you should check out wolf and cub also if u havent already.

its hard to see anything from that angle can u post some better images like a front and side and a 3/4 view. i know the comic quite well so ill be happy to critique it, i just need better shots

Wow, one of the manga i love, along with Akira, Naruto,Ushio to Tora, and many others :D

Can't wait to see the whole character :)

Please, model Anotsu too, if you can :)

I agree with ukyo i want to see another angle or two more...
It's hard to tell so far since you just started.
I agree it's one of the most suckering stories I've read in manga.
Hope to see him finished soon.

OK now where cooking, first his jaw is way to pointiy for manji. he is almost looking like anpther character from the manga's. someone manji didnt fight these two assians one of them had a big heavy packpack. they were killed by a swordsman with a sawed sword. anyways

the chin shopuld be wider and even not come to a point. o good strong jaw. the pointy jaw almost makes him more femine softer, manji is defiantly so soft. also give him a little more jaw bone a strong jaw give more manly ness more muscle to the character.

his ears are to thin or are sticking out a litle to much or its some of both. i see what your trying to do with the eyes but i think u should model them first then deform them with blendshapes. your just making it harder for your self. also i think the eyes are a little too small and a little to far apart.

his brow ridge needs to be a little stronger, mabye less curved or give him a stronger forehead. and ;ast but not least, i know you must hate me now sorry i think this can be a great modle and im just critiquing from a fans POV of this character is his neck needs to be wider and stronger. i think over all everything looks to thin.

its looking good though its a good foundation i cant wait to see how he comes out. good luck. hope ypu dont hate me.

i need to turn on symmetry to start making modifications to my model...help! lol if someone knows how to turn symmetry on in maya please post so i can get these changes done and get the model back up

gunslingerblack
09-01-2003, 10:03 PM
well i decided i needed something to do so by using the scale tool and the move tool ive laborously circumvented the symmetry option here's a few updated views according to crits

heres a front taken from camera view (i locked the camera to the grid and brought it to the axis) but i can't figure out how to get rid of my image panes the book i have tells u how to turn them on but not how to get rid of them and you'll see in the side view.

how new to maya are u, and what other program have u been modeling in up till now

gunslingerblack
09-02-2003, 03:30 AM
sorry for the wait on the side view and ive been using maya for about a month but very sporatically, i just got my tonsils out so ive had alot of time on my hands and that's why i decided to start this little project as for what other program i had been practicing lightwave for about a year but i hadn't gone any further that modelling i couldn't really get that perfect , but it seems im getting almost the same results i had in lightwave in maya so im looking forward to going farther into animation and modelling scenery

mastering maya 3, best book youll ever buy. i know they are up to 5 now in the software but get that book. it should be cheap now, youll thak me later.

if u want to get rid of the plane you can go into the hypershade and find the camera and just delet the image node

thanks man yeah i have maya 4.5 savvy its pretty good plus im using the internet resources, the tutorial i followed to create this head was an internet tutorial. anyways any more crits that you can think of or should i continue on to the body? oh and a question, im probably not going to have full detail bump maps, that is im not going to map on pores and what not i'll probably just map bump for the eyebrows and scars. should i wait till the model is done to start mapping or should i try a cylindrical uv for the head and then continue on to the body??

ukyo
09-02-2003, 03:53 AM
yeah i have more critique on the head, im trying to make an ear right now for my own head. ummm i forget is this poly or nurbs. if its nurbs i cant help ya but if its poly then you should spend the 5 hours layingout your uvs use cylindes for arms and legs and finges not heads youll get unwanted warping. as for poors and scars yeah i agree do it with a bmp map. give me like an hour and ill post a critique for ya.

hey man what a cool idea!
Manji's gonna be a hard one to tackle but thats a great concept. Its just my two cents but i wouldnt worry so much about nailing down his exact proportions, half the fun of "covering" someone elses work is adding your own flavor to it. I dig what you got going there.

Hey gunslingerblack,

I'm not sure if this is what you're asking, but I think if you duplicate the other half of the face as an instance, you can tweak just one side of the face and have the other mirror the changes in real time.

edit --> duplicate [options box]
under geometry type, change from copy to instance.

thanks dreadling i think im gonna take ur advice and evenflow thank you as well i will be trying that out this afternoon, i'll probably take a shower and hit up some modelling then i'll post the head in its final form and move on to modelling the body, hopefully i'll get some pictures up in the next few days

p.s. should i leave the head and body disconnected until i make all the facial morphs with blendshapes??

ok sorry it took me so long to get back to ya bro,
ok hes looking good but he still isnt manji. i think your modeling his eyes deformed already i think it would be better to model un defoprmed eyes and then after you get the proper proportions deforem them IMO

also the were a few things with the jaw and fore head. i hope i dont offend you i say these thing with humbelness i am only trying to help

his chin is still to pointy i would flatten it out but the jaw line is looking good and strong nice job.

his brow is curving up it should be straigh the curve up suggest softness or kind eyes manji is not soft and only semi kind. and bring his nose down a little i think theres a little to much space between the nose base and the upper lip. and lengthen his neck a little manji is lean not a line backer i think the neck is too thick like a line backer.

now on the side things are working well his lips meet up with his eye line but that pointy chin is haunting you. also the point on the jaw where it starts to angel from vertical to horizontal is to high it should fall belowthe top lip that will give him a stronger profil. and lastly his fore head is waaaay to sloped back need to be more flush.

please dont hate me i just want to help ya. and ofcourse you can always tell me to f@#k off.

heres a side view

gunslingerblack
09-03-2003, 04:34 AM
and here's something to put it in perspective since u know how it always looks different on camera (note: i didn't change the width of the head, that's just how it looks from the front viewport not shot from the front with the camera)

gunslingerblack

heres' a front view from the camera so u can see the way it'll really look

looking good man, i think i would narrow his head alittle make it less wide on the sides by shrinking the space between the ears and the eyes, but its looking good man. and i would also flatten out his brow line not the top but the bottom where his eye lids are. nice work man you have a great start.

ok i think this is one of my better shots at a torso, i have been looking at the book the whole time i was modelling and i think i got the proper weight and look of the torso check it out weeee

actually i was planning on animating the sequence where he firghts maki at the end of "dreamsong" with one arm cut off heres my question to you guys because he def gets chopped up pretty good at the end of the sequence should i use maya cloth for his kimono since it's pretty loose fitting i figured that maya cloth would be best suited, but then arises the problem of how do i make the cut animation in the cloth can i use blendshapes for the cloth too? and im figuring that i should just model him with both arms and have another file of him armless but if i can achieve the cut with blendshapes then i will model the whole kimono and then just take away the arm part of his kimono. the reason i want to use cloth is to get that weight and movement effect in the animation without having to use massive amounts of deformers on the actual cloth surface

ukyo
09-04-2003, 02:47 AM
STAY AWAY FROM THE CLOTH SON< PUT THE CLOTH DOWN AND NO ONE WILL GET HURT SLOWLY BACK AWAY FROM THE CLOTH.

serioulsy your asking and pleading for headaches with cloth, unless you want to go into special effects with particles and dynamics and things of that nature i would continue to hone your modeling and animation skills.

id use cluster and lattice deformers, as for making the cloth fall of good luck and when u figure it out u must share casue id love to know how to do that.

by the by EXCELLENT choice on scenes to animate now im super excited to see it.

muahahahahahaa and the body is completed! now where should i move onto from here? texturing the body and adding hair?? then i guess clothes and constraining would come after that huh?and im assuming i should make all the facial morphs before i constrain him to his bones XP advice please ive actually never made it as far as im about to go.

Ha ha ha ha, such excitment!

Dang, hes looking pretty sweet, I really like the form of the muscles and the over all organic feel of the model, nice stuff! One thing, but hear me out completely on this one. His lower body looks kinda thick and overall he looks alittle squat, but with the additon of clothes(wich may need the underlying thickness, so it could be a goodthing) and hair, wich will add height, he might be spot on. Im gonna hold any thoughts till i see him more completed, but it looks awesome to me!
