Just starting my thread, I will be posting something later on tonight or tomorrow I'm having a hard time getting something decent out of maya fluids.

Cheers !

After watching Vik's sims I wasn't so sure about posting this but anyways this is what I have so far, theres not much shape yet., I started with the Default nuke as reference for texture, movement etc, not a very good reference I know but is all I have for the moment.

Nice color and shading, but the noise animation is to quick.

Every single frame looks very nice, but in motion it looks too noisy.

Hey, so after 2 days of playing and reading Viki's post I got here !!! I think this is looking a lot better, I got only the mushroom cloud tomorrow I will work on the rest.
I'm very happy with the results so far.

Here the playblast.

Again Thank you Viki I would have never gotten this far withouth your help man. I have learnt a lot from your tests.

No offence dude, but how much of that did you actually do? That looks virtually identical to the file Vik uploaded, even the camera angle is the same.

JohnPGiancarlo

Not taken, is not the same but I got the mushroom shape using the same model and technique, "using density and heat", also took some of the advice given by wayne hollingsworth (http://www.vimeo.com/user1445325) , I also used a bit of velocity swirl and other things, put a few expresions to control it a bit better I could'nt make it look like Viki's even if I wanted :) so here the expressions used:

Bouyancy:
if(frame<10)NukeShape.densityBuoyancy=.015;
else NukeShape.densityBuoyancy=0.001;

Velocity:
if (frame < 10)NukeShape.velocitySwirl=10;
else NukeShape.velocitySwirl=0;

Gravity:
if (frame < 15) NukeShape.gravity=98;
else NukeShape.gravity=.98;

Density Scale
if (frame < 15) NukeShape.densityScale=200;
else NukeShape.densityScaley=30;

Volume Axis
if(frame<5)volumeAxisField1.magnitude=12.5;
else volumeAxisField1.magnitude=0;

I also used a Uniform field
if (frame<15) uniformField1.magnitude =5;
else uniformField1.magnitude=0;

NukeShape.textureTime = time*0.125;

Simulation rate scale 0.5

here a playblast comparison you will see the difference I do have to agree with you that I got to this because of Viks studies and I really thank him for it, I would not use his file to do my shot I'm not that mediocre.

Guys I apologize for the upload. I didnt intend to oversell my stuff. I just wanted to share my knowledge & justify my test whether they are correct or not ,so that I can make some conclusions on my research.
@johnP : ur tests are truly amazing & I see some good techniques devleoping here :)
plz feel free to dissect my uploaded file incase if u wanna have a look & let me know about its structural foramtion by giving ur valuable feedback so I can improve more & can take it to next level of realism.
happy balsting!

@Aiki : Dude I am really having high pressure here at work. cant spare a time for this challenge on weekdays. As I only get free on weekends so I was wondering If we can team up for this show or u can give me a hand for the final look?
Let me know please, If it`s not possible then Never mind everything`s cool:)
Best Of luck fellas
Vik

Good explosion dude! :thumbsup:

My crits would be also here the scale. It all looks too fast to me. Itīs more like a 10-20 meters in height explosion than a 80 to 200 m (or more). But maybe thatīs the look you would like to go about?

If you could get this to scale larger but keep the characteristics you have in this sim, I think itīs getting near a visually perfectly pleasing explosion.

I see no problem in taking advantage of known settings for good explosions. A simulation is simply mostly dependent on good settings but maybe getting to know the settings yourself would be a good excercise in this case. ;) Anyway, keep it up! Hope to see this evolve.

Now youīre getting to it! Looking sweet already. Composoting fits well and I like the visual shockwave effect. Maybe itīs still a bit too jittery and the smoke/dust could use some more variation in color.

keep it up!

Thanks man :) , what kinda color, like a light brown or a noise maybe?

Katachi

yep, a light and maybe also darker brown should fit in there quite well and give it more "strength".

Looks like your texture speed is too fast for the animation, slow it down a little. Looks good otherwise.

one of the nicest maya sims i have seen, although the overall speed kind of makes this look small. just the time between the blast and shockwave implies that the explosion took place like 300 meters away instead of a more realistic 6-10 miles away.

at 300 meters, the flash is the only thing you will see before you turn to dust.. lol.

Hello Thanks for your comments... last shot is not ready but I'll try to finish the FXs on this one, probably with particles and fluid shaders, Don't Know yet.

My only critique would be the speed of the explosion.
Overall the work is fantastic.
Great job!

Hello, this is my final entry, no more tweaks, this is it.
I really enjoy working on this, I have to say that I learn a lot about maya fluids, again Thanks Vik , you are the man. . :thumbsup:

Nice shots, good timing, I felt the bomb drop to explosion cut was a little quick for some reason, otherwise beautiful :)

Great work man, love the lead in's and lead outs to the actual nuke shot, adds a lot more to the overall composition.

Good luck.

Jebus, this is a good entry.

You got one more week to tweak it if you wish, either way you get a mention for finishing ON TIME.

Hey John,

You have done a great job. I love the ground blast. Awesome entry!

I generally like the animation and love the TU-95. my only cirt is the blast shock wave. you have the blast wave but not the suction wave as the mushroom cloud rises up and pulls the air back. I do see a secondary wave but it looks like it is moving away from the camera

Hello Guys, After reading all the comments I decided to try this shot again in the comp , I would not have time to SIM this again, but at least this time you can see the full sim. I found out though that to make this work all you have to do is to tilt your heads 45 degreeds to the right and blink a lot :).
