View Full Version : normal maps from zbrush to maya
touleechang 02-12-2010, 01:11 AM need help getting the normal map from zbrush to maya. i was able to generate the normal maps from zbrush to maya but in maya, the render is all good but the details arent there as it should be. the little details is not showing up as it should. if u compare the rendered images from maya to the model n zbrush, u can see that the normal map is there but it is slightly not showing the full potential of the normal map. it looks as if it only showed up to 80% of what the actual details that r n the zbrush model. thanks in advance

Sounds like maybe you painted details in ZBrush that are smaller than the pixels of your normal map? What size normal map are you using, and for what kind of subject, like 1024x1024 for the head?
After you've done more normal mapping, you'll get a sense of how small the details need to be before it's too small.

thanks for the response but i was working on just a human head and the whole body of a horse. for the human head, it is a male and i had details like veins on the temporal and pores on the chin and side burns too but it still has the same issue as i was explaining before when rendering in maya. also with the horse, ive sculpted out the horse muscles and even that is alot bigger than the small pores, it still gave me the same result and my map is 2048x2048. i was thinking could it be the lighting? thanks

Ah then it sounds like you might be hooking up the normal map as a standard grayscale bump map, rather than as a normal map.
I don't use Maya, but maybe this info will help you:
