I was wondering why, when i link a bunch of objects together, and then try to rotate some of them, alot of scaling goes on, often ruining the form. can someone help?

Try not using nonuniformscaling on objects
To solve this:
Select the objects
Go to Hierarchy/Pivot/ and push RESET SCALE at the adjust transform rollout

The scaling is always applied last, even if you did the scaling
before you linked/rotated the objects. Use the XForm modifier
to trap the scaling into the object's modify stack.
Also check out the "Reset XForm" Utility.

thanks for your replys, although..
reset xform and reset scale reset the object to its base scale, but if i try to rotate them they just go and scale badly still for some reason. Even if i unlink them a hundred times. I've tryed a few things.. I'm really not sure how to get them back to normal. Hmm but I tell ya I am going to try detaching everything in the editpoly so i can get my models back! Hopefully that will be a work around, since it will be a new object... i hope. !

i have had this problem numerous times, don't know what causes it, and don't even know what fixeds it.

Usually i restart my computer and that seems to make things right, i think it's some kind of 'feature' or sommin.

Collapsing and reseting the object doesn't seem to fix it.

if nothing else, you now know you're not alone.

good luck

Go to the hierarchy tab and into the Link info. Under the inherit rollout uncheck the scale boxes, with the object that is scaling wierdly selected. I think that should do it.

hey, i tryed all that.. (reset xform, hierarcy>reset scale, etc) except restarting my computer since i dont thing thats quite it! i restarted max and it still did it though. and quite humorously i exported the affected objects to a 3ds file and then imported them back, and they were mongo badly scaled. beyond use. Oh well if anyone gets this problem, i got by it by detaching the mesh in the object to a new object, although all my rotation was screwed so i had to approximate ( and i had it just right too! ) anyways! cheers for your help and imput! I got my little guy walking around, everythings right in the world again!

JeT. I think the problem with RESET SCALE(and RESET TRANSFORM btw) is that only works with one by one object(what a feature!!). If you select a bunch of objects and push the button, only one of them will get reset scaled. If you can try again with those problematic objects and say if this(pushing the reset scale to the objects one by one) work would be cool.
And remember, avoid NONUNIFORM(and uniform 8)) scaling. If you need to scale something, try scaling on subobject mode.

Reality3D! I tryed that! one at a time! It's not the answer I'm looking for!

First up, I'm not SCALING, i'm ROTATING, and the ROTATION is affecting the SCALE of objects.

and I havent been using nonuniform scaling.

even after I unlinked, reset scale, reset xform, restarted my computer, (pfft), I still couldnt rotate a seemingly independent sphere without it skewing all over the place. anyway, I had to reset the scale then detach the mesh to a new object to fix it.

but thanks!
