View Full Version : Enchanted Forest - Environment/Character - Pearson
pearson 05-21-2002, 09:39 AM Well, I'm back. Work deadlines made me drop out of the God/Demon challenge, and kept me out of the last challenge, but I'm definately in on this one!
Here is a quick Painter sketch of what I have in mind. As you can see, I can't paint. :annoyed:
http://www.geocities.com/pear_son001/forest_comp1b.txt
The idea is that the robot is lost in the forest and is as curious about the fairy as the fairy is about him.
I want to texture it, if I have the time (read: "no way in hell am I going to texture this")

Cool idea.
Ok, no textures but will we see some basic colours. I can see the lighting being really important here, lots of potential.

Nice, I really love the character !!
Nice Idea to

This is a concept for the "fairy". I don't want it to be the usual chick with wings, though I think it needs some human features so it isn't just some strange insect. Sooo, it's six "legs" are human arms, with hands at the ends. :p

Anybody else going to E3 tomorrow...<looks at watch>... er...today? Hope I'll get some free swag! (unlike last year :annoyed: )

Nice idea. Your sketch seems quite bright overall. It might be cool to have the lighting mainly coming from the fairy. Might be more dramatic?

Thanks for the comments guys and gal!
@clanger - Yes there will be colors, or more likely crappy procedural noise to keep it from being just solid colors. I am going to focus on the modeling and lighting.
@hypronost - Thanks!
@one333 - Well, as I said, I can't paint to save my life. I tried to show that the fairy was giving off a lot of light, but... I think the moon will be a cool (blue) secondary light source to offset the warm light from the fairy. Thanks for the links!
@leigh - :D Thanks! BTW, loved your texture tutorials!!
@russo - [sniff!] I'm offended! My tank-buggy was NOT cute! :p Brincadeira!
Here is the tree the bot is leaning against. Just the first pass.

Lil' update: Here's the tree again. Working on the roots right now. The eyebrows need some work, and the nose smoothed out too much; have to fix that.
http://www.geocities.com/pear_son001/tree2.txt
And here's the start to the robot; his head. Not smoothed (Still have to go fix all the edge loops, etc.).

Hopefully this weekend will see a lot of progress. :wip: :wip:

Wow, just catching up, this challenge is crazy..
Very cool! Really like the robot and fairy design, great style. The tree char is cool too, I like the knotty eye, nice touches.
Can't wait to see all this stuff come together, should be great.

Well, of course, things came up this weekend that kept me from working as much as I'd like, but I did get a little done.
The robot is an older model domestic servant. His hydrogen engine releases steam from the exhaust ports on his back. His design shows a style that has long since gone out of fashion, with hints of a tuxedo and top hat.
http://www.geocities.com/pear_son001/torso_wip.txthttp://www.geocities.com/pear_son001/torso_wip2.txt
@ZrO-1 - Thanks! Hopefully I can do justice to the designs.
@hypercube - I know what you mean! Thanks for the compliments...I wondered about whether the eyes should be round...glad you like!

Legs are just placeholders. Arms are not finished. No hands yet. Just trying to get the pose and camera angle down. Lighting this is going to be tricky.

Woo, cool. Like the back details and tuxedo notion..it's always good when things are given thought like that.
And for what it's worth, I really like where the arms are/going right now, I'd do the same thing on the legs even.
Excellent!
I can't believe the number of posts there are here that i've missed/passed over.
Hope those WIP thumbs get updated soon...

Consider me a fan. I like it!
Reminds me of Stanilsav Lem's story of a robot that decides to go rock climbing.

I like that last picture. The robot's pose kind of tells me that he's completly enthralled with whatever it is that he has in his hand. I really think that's a fantastic pose. :applause:

Wow, the robot has a really great sense of character, I like...
The fairy's great too, cause you've really stayed away from the traditional look, which is always nice.

Thanks all for the comments! :bounce: I will have a new pic/s up tonight sometime (late). Arms will be finished, legs and feet finished, but probably still no hands, though.
@dodo3d - Thanks! The reason the arms are bigger than I painted is because they are supposed to look like sleeves, with cuffs and everything. The painting was mostly for the pose and scene setup.
@hypercube - Thanks for appreciating the details. Things are so much more believable if they they have a history...it's just tricky to think of all the details. I'm still debating the collar; I think it may be a bit too much like real clothing. The legs are getting the same treatment as the arms, BTW.
@AJ_23 - Thank you! I know exactly what you mean about overlooking posts. Hopefully the thumbnail page will get a few more people to look at my thread.
@dobermunk - Glad you like it! I've never heard of that story, but I like to read...I'll have to see if it's in English.
@ZrO-1 - Thanks! I was surprised by how easily the pose came together, but I'm very happy with it. I'm glad to know it reads well for other people, too.
@Traiven3d - Thanks! Yeah, doing the same stuff that's been done 1000 times before just isn't as fun as making up new crazy stuff! Glad you like!

Well, sorry about the wait, but RealLife(tm) kept me busy for a bit.
Here's the update. Still no hands, just placeholder fists. Forearms look to need a bit of rework so I can get the pose I need. Neck needs to be joined to the body.

Awesome. Really love the continuation of the design, great forms. The hinging rocks. :buttrock:

Hell, that guy is so interesting I'd love to see him outside the forest too :)

06-10-2002, 09:28 AM
lol, thanks guys! Yeah, I've only got a cracked copy of RealLife(tm), so there's no manual, or tech support or anything. Sometimes it's like a bad ad banner and fills up the whole screen and I can't do anything until I can figure out how to minimize it. :p
Here is the first pass at the hand. Also fixed the forarm so it can now rotate longitudinally, and changed the sleeve cuff to prevent inter-penetrating geometry. No pics of that, though. Hands are the last thing left, then on to the "fairy".

Sorry if the pics are unavailable sometimes. Please let me know so I can setup another account. Thanks!

Pearson on a critique to Kyorih about subdivision of scene u said about the "rule of the third" or something like this...where do you read about it?
pearson
06-11-2002, 10:18 PM
@ZrO-1 - lol :D
@Gamoron - Thanks! I love all things mechanized, and I like to see robots especially as beings with thoughts and feelings, or at least curiousity.
@dobermunk - Hmm...I hadn't thought of a mitten...be a lot easier to model though! :D Maybe just two really wide fingers...nah, I'm this far along already. I'll keep em. Thanks for the encouragement!
@Carloki - Here is a quick link I found through google for you: Rule of Thirds (http://www.kodak.com/global/en/consumer/education/programs/composition/photoProgramComp3rd1.shtml) I learned about it in art class.
OK, peeps, I learned my lesson last time, so I ain't sayin' when I'm going to post again:shame:...but I am working on the hand right now...:wip:

I like the original hand, keep it. The fearie's great, when will the model be ready. Any tips or sites to help me with my modelling? I use max, and I'm wondering if I should learn to use nurbs or stick with splines.

@AJ_23 - OK, OK! Uncle! Here's your stinking update! :p
@Gamoron - Heh, I use Maya, and before that Power Animator. To me nurbs and splines are the same thing. If you mean nurbs or polys, then the answer depends on what you want to do. Pre-rendered stuff (movies, commercials, location-based entertainment) uses nurbs, or subDs. Realtime (games, VR) use only polys, and very few at that. Low-poly is a different skill set altogether.
@Pentagramma - Thanks! I don't have much time, but I'm trying to hurry! I'm looking forward to the Guarana. :) It's so hard to describe how it tastes to people who have never tried it

I really love the fingers Pearson. Just one question: Will all the nice detail like the retaining/rotation pins even be noticable in the render?
pearson
06-14-2002, 02:35 AM
@Stipen - Wow, Thanks! How come you're not in this challenge? I liked your PA entry.
@ZrO-1 - Thanks, I like the new fingers too. I didn't think the little details would be noticable, but those little edges catch the light even at a distance and give that extra bit of realism. Plus I'll probably do a few closeup renders of the fairy and the hand will be pretty big in those.
And here's the first pass at the "fairy". I've only worked on the face; the rest is just blocked in.
ZrO-1
06-14-2002, 05:35 AM
Oh yeah, good point I didn't think about a close-up.
I really like the fairy's face so far. I looks much more feminine and anamorphic (is that the right word to use) that it did in the sketch. I like it.
hypercube
06-14-2002, 06:06 AM
Nifty fingers..definitely agree that all those little things add up, even from a distance.
Digging the 'fairy' so far, too..I kind of liked the more vertical stance of the original sketch though. The face is cool though. Look forward to more of her(?).
P.S. Zr0-1, I think the word you're looking for is 'anthropomorphic'..unless the fairy is on 16:9 DVD :D Know what ya mean though, it is.

06-14-2002, 07:45 AM
Nice!
I was also thinking about the dimensions - your piece really begs for at least two central camera perspectives - one for the robot and his(?) environment (the woods) and one for the fairy and her (?) environment (the robot).
Very interesting scale / perspective thing going on.
Also like the finger details, seems like there's a bolt missing in the round indentations at each joint, though. Your approach is also more daring than mine :hmm:

Thanks people! It's been a relief to have a break from the bot and work on this...erm...girl. ;)
I definately need to start doing more detailed composition studies to give you guys time to show me the errors of my ways. :p Plus figure out how to get the shader/glow/particles on this chick(!?) right.
@dobermunk - About the fingers, do you mean that the pivot pin doesn't seem to go all the way through from one side to the other? It is just one cylinder, so it goes right through. These were just temp experiments with the fingers; just throw away stuff. When I finish the fairy I will do them again, but with lots more hand tweaking to give the joints better detail.
OK, here is the fairy with a little photoshop glow just to get my mind going in the right direction. She's in a "bind pose". The only thing that still needs work are the wing details (ribs), and stiching the wings into the body.
Gamoron
06-15-2002, 04:12 PM
Can I just make a comment about the fairy? Don't get me wrong I love what you're doing but I think your model has gone off track from the original sketch. I guess this is normal for CG but I think that what I found appealling about the sketched fearie was her oversized head. Looking at the model I think you should keep the head/wings at the current size but then shrink her body down, and then the hands a little further to regain some of the delicateness(?) I don't think that's a word, she had before. It is great though, and I look forward to seeing more.:applause:
I'll shut up now.
pearson
06-15-2002, 07:35 PM
@Gamoron - Crits are always welcome. It's nice to have people say they love your stuff, but it really helps to have fresh eyes look at the work. And you're quite right, too. I really like the sketch and need to spend more time making the model look like it. Do you think it looks better with the thumb (the pair of hands nearest the head) or without (the other four hands)? I'm leaning toward no thumb.
I should have an update tonight. [crosses fingers] lol
pearson
06-16-2002, 07:38 AM
Hey! For once I update when I said I would! Amazing! :p
I scaled down the body to match the sketch better (thanks Gamoron!), and did the details of the wing divisions. I think that might need to be toned down a bit, though. This is a crude pose from a straight smooth bind to the skeleton; just took what it assigned.
I just noticed that the legs are way too skinny:hmm:....I'm starting to get sick of this chick, though...maybe I'll play with that tree guy again...his roots sure need fixing!:surprised
Gamoron
06-16-2002, 11:05 PM
I like her legs the way they are. She's insect like so why not have thin legs on her like a bug? Then again if your heading for a more toddler like character, chubby limbs would be better.
Sorry I didn't get back on the thumbs sooner. Looks fine now without, though I didn't see why you couldn't keep them earlier. I've always felt that an intelligent creature would have to have something like an opposable thumb to become intelligent. But she is magical though, and there's no rules there.
:applause:
I like her.
ZrO-1
06-17-2002, 01:05 AM
I like the veining on the wings. That looks cool. I'm not sure if I like her having six limbs though. Sort of makes her look more like a bug than a fairy. I don't know...just my opinion. Overall though I think its really pretty sweet.
