View Full Version : Vue 8 Infinite, most stable on which platform?
FIL-101 02-11-2010, 11:17 AM I've got a project coming up which involves landscapes and city creation. I've been looking at Vue for some time and it looks like I'm going to purchase it for this project. I currently run a Mac Pro (32bit) with Snow leopard and under bootcamp I run Vista so I can use Softimage. Any rendering would be carried out using a third party render farm. My Question is this, under which platform does Vue 8 run with the most stability? As a second question I would ask, has xstream become more stable in Vue 8 and is it worth the perceived hassle?

q1. vueīs performing at itīs best on windows 64bit.
q2. vue 8 is much more stable then previous versions where @ this point of time.
as for xstream vs infinite, well in my opinion infinite still seems alittle more stable, but vue 8 xstream has fixed alot of issues and i dont hear any of the people i work more closely with complaining about any specifiq xstream issues that cant be worked around.
Obviously how good xstream works for you depends on which app you use it with.

Ok to turn the question around a little. By not purchasing Xtream am I missing out? Although I intend to import 3D elements created in Softimage into Vue, is the extra cost of Xtream worth the money? (You can tell I'm working with micro budgets can't you) Obviously if I were using Xtreme inside of Softimage I would be stuck with the windows version. That's why up until now I've only been considering the stand alone version.

if money is of concern, then working around the limitations of only using vue 8 infinite isnt a bad idea at all.
My opinion is that you dont lose out on that many features, the one thing you do lose is the ability to work inside of softimage and creating your terrains and plants directly inside of softimage. Now that is obviously a dealbreaker for some and itīs very smooth both for rendering and producing animations and realy the best of both worlds if you need it.
But as you are aware it comes with a bigger pricetag and according to some people alittle less stability then compared to infinite.
Thereīs to be honst tho, nothing you can do with xstream that you cant do with infinite, but it requires additional postwork and composite, which requires more time and headaches, but iīm guessing you already know your way around that block.
Exactly what do you need to do? By your post you sound like an experienced guy but without knowledge of vue, so perhaps itīs better to hire a skilled vue artist to help you with this gig, depending on what needs to be done it could very well end up being cheaper then buying the app and certainly allow for alot quicker project time.
Vue is certainly an easy app to get down with, but it has alot to offer under itīs hood so cranking out a hq project might take you more workhours then you think even with a straightforward application like vue.

Thanks for the tips Mike.H. I reckon I'll probably plumb for Infinite but the main thing is I'm looking forward to rolling up my sleeves and getting into Vue. As Steve Jarret said in his editorial for 3D World magazine this month, we should all make a new years resolution to expand our skill sets and push into unknown territory. I'm looking forward to the challenge. Although it may lead to a few more postings on the vue forum when I get stuck! Which I'm bound to do. Cheers for the advice and wish me luck...

I think you'll find Vue one of the easier programs to learn. Ive been working with Vue 8 Infinite for about a month (hard to kick the habit of Vue 6), though Ive been a Vue user since Vue 2.
One thing that really surprised me about Vue 8 Infinite was how good the COLLADA based import worked. A little odd, yes, but its useful if you are developing content for games and want to repurpose said content.
