View Full Version : Character WIP: Captain Ahab

I'd wanted to try this ever since I saw the Ahab design on Penny Arcade (http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2010/1/15/) last month, but I didn't get around to it until last night. If they had caricatured an actual game model, what would it have looked like? I'm working backwards, trying to pull the design a little closer to normal anatomy, but not too far. The only intentional deviations so far have been pulling the chin back, the ears forward, and defining the brow.
I hope that's close enough for the head's base mesh, before sculpting, but I'll probably make a few more tweaks if there's any feedback. For now, I'm taking a break to work on teeth (I borrowed teeth from an older model for placeholders).
I'm not exactly sure what I'll do about the rest of the body below the chest, as there's no reference for it, though I figure he'll have to have a laser peg leg, not unlike the laser harpoon, in place of the original ivory.

Looking good! Keep it up.

Haven't had a lot of time to work on this for the last few days, but at least I have the rest of the weekend.
Trying to nail down some proportions and establish reasonable anatomy, even though a lot of it will be hidden or chopped off in the final model. The upper body might need to be exaggerated a little more to have the same feeling as the reference, but I think I'm close enough to safely retopologize the parts which will need sculpting later.

That was probably too much time spent fixing topology on parts that won't show up in the end, and I'm still not pleased with the legs. I bumped the proportions up to 8.5 heads high, blocked in hair as a guide for later, and I'm starting on the armor.
Excuse the painted-in eyebrow in that last one.

Looks good, the only thing that looks odd is the fact that he has too turn his head too look at anything!
His protruding nose and recessed eyes would stop him from having any kind of normal visual pathway.

It is quite the nose, isn't it?
Slow going, but I'm sticking to it. ;)
I've been having a heck of a time getting the crow's feet to look the way I want, obviously stylized but not too absurd either. I think most of the symmetrical features are the way I want them. Hopefully the finer detailing won't be too much trouble.
really like this guy, great style. i tihnk although what Mateism said about him not been able to see properly is quite true, i tihnk its at times like that when you an claim artistic license ;)

Thanks. He might have to hold a map and compass at arm's length to navigate, but he shouldn't have too much trouble spotting whales, I think.
Small update. I added a little color, and I'm trying to get the scar just right. I like the part above the eye best, so if I could figure out how I did that, the rest will be fine sooner or later.

He's coming along nicely, almost got a TF2 feel about him.
Keep it up!
