I'm a pretty new CG artist, currently working on learning to model the human face. I've gotten that pretty well down, but I'm having trouble with rendering hair. Mental Ray renders fur perfectly fine for me, but as you can see in the pictures the hair is simply not rendering very well. I'm using Maya 2009 Unlimited, and rendering in Mental Ray.

Can anyone offer a good tutorial or simply some advice that may help me with the hair rendering?

The model is still very much a work in progress so please no critique on her at this time :) . I'll post the finished image eventually but haven't even really started working on texture for her.

As you can see in this picture, though it isn't really mapped on right, the fur renders well, seeming full and thick, with good shading that seems to react to the light.

When I render with hair, however, it's washed out, oddly colored, and doesn't react to light at all. The render settings between these two images are exactly the same, and you will be interested to hear that the hair's colors are all dark, so there's absolutely no reason it should be looking blonde.
