View Full Version : Extrude along a path (NURBS)
Nicool 08-30-2003, 09:42 PM Hye,
I can't explain it without this picture... How to scale the end shape of the extrude? (Even if I don't like 3dstudiomax a lot... Its spline extrusion make possible to manage the la shape from a simple graph).
(note : My aim is to shape a simple tornado-like model : a curve (the path) a circle)
Thanks

Are you trying to extrude a poly?
If not then maybe just a simple loft perhaps....?
I'm not sure in what instance you are trying to do this.

yes it seems like you want a nurbs loft
select the two splines in order you want to loft them then Surfaces -> Loft
hope this is what your looking for

to make a tornado, you may want to look at this tutorial

Hmmm....simple way to tornado like nurbs : just create normal extude with 1 spline and 1 nurbs circle, extrude it, all you have to do is select hull then rescale the hull, you don't have to create many of circle along a path :)

DeathBrain understood what I need... But I'm sorry to learn that there seams to exist no other way that tweak by hand to get a "conical" extrusion. I though there may be another method.
If you know it :wavey: Thanks

hmm...any sample pic/illustration ? that would be great :)

The model you did is near the model I want build by extrusion :scream:

When you have the model that deathbrain created, you could select the vertices of a row and scale them to match your own needs.

I've worked with quite a few different programs, and each one does things differently. Some have some really great stuff, while obviously lacking in others. What I have learned, is that you need to keep in mind how each program works, and work within that. Not always can you have exactly the same methodology.
That being said, try this:
1. Create a primitive NURBS cylinder, with say, about 8-12 spans. Scale it to the height you wish your tornado to be.
2. Change to the animation module, and click on Deform -> Create Nonlinear -> Flare. Set the Start Flare X & Y, and the End Flare X & Y, to make it go narrower at the bottom. Change the Curve attribute to make it curve the way you want.
3. Now click on Deform -> Create Nonlinear -> Sine. Change the amlplitude and the wavelength to bend it to the desired curve.
4. Finally click on Deform -> Create Nonlinear -> Twist. Change the End Angle to twist it around.
The advantage to this modeling setup, is that now it's already set up to animate. Just experiment with changing different attributes of the deformers, and keying them as you go.
