View Full Version : Grass
keithBeltro 02-09-2010, 02:07 AM Good evening,
What do you recommend for creating grass in still scenes and animated ones?
I was thinking of using Vray fur or MentalRay hair, but then I just modeled out a small patch and was using proxies instead.
What method do you use?
Thanks!
Keith

Hey keith... I'm new to this forum, however just wanted to let you know I just posted a tutorial in my site on the method I use for grass. Hope you find it useful:

alpha textures on poly planes are always effective (depending how far away it is from the camera of course).

Thank you,
When I was doing the proxy method I was not sure if I was just shooting myself in the foot. My computer has 12gigs of memory, so I believe I would be ok, for some reason I felt as though I was going about it all wrong.

tell me about it... my computer only has 4 gigs of memory, and i am running 32 bit OS. My renders kept crashing all the time because of my vegetation. I was able to cut my memory use in half by using the method explained in the tutorial. From like over 3 gigs used up (just doing regular scatter) to under 1.9 per render (scattering proxies), and getting better results.
