JoeCosman 05-21-2002, 05:32 AM THis one sounds like it would be a bit of fun for me. I'm in this time. :-)
Just gimme a few days to organize my ideas.

I'm toying around with the idea of a ghost-like forest. like someone leveled all the trees, and on certain nights when the moon is full, you can see the silhouette of the trees that used to be there.
make sense?
anyway, I stay up too late to do anything really cool, but I think I'm gonna stick with this one for a while.

Cool idea! If you pull it off right, it should look absolutely incredable. I like the sketch...but I'm not sure about the path in the middle of the pic.

Nice pic there..
Bloom it to hell, just make sure you have it under control:bounce:
Has a similar feeling to what im after in mine.
Anyway, keep at it...Looking promising. And if my track record is anything to go by, all your best work is done late into the night....well more (in my case) into the early hours of the mornings:surprised
I really like your idea.... it has a good meaining behind it (for me anyway). I look forward to seeing more!

I'm not sure about the path in the middle either, but then again 2d art isnt my strong point- on the computer anyways.
thank you all for your input. hopefully, I'll get to put some serious hours in on the long weekend. perhaps by then, my idea will be more clearly illustrated. I'm stoked.

Here's a rather small update.
Making trees are like snowballs on a mountain. the first part is the hard part, then it's all downhill.
I couldnt find a decent automated Tree model (who here aint using one???) so I'm building my own. once the main trunks are laid in, I can have fun with instancing.
I'll build 3 or 4 distinct trees and leaf clusters, and we'll see how many I can put in the scene before my times go through the roof ;-)
most of my time will be spent lighting and texturing(which will be little or subtle enough.)
http://joe.microcosman.com/ForumArt/EnchantedForest/TreesA0.jpg
funny, though. The look of Trees are a product of broken branches, healed wounds, and thousands of weather cycles. how does one make a perfect tree spirit look real without the addition of weathering and trauma?

i really like your concept, its one of the most enchanting in a metaphysical way. i do actually, by the way, really like the path.
it allows the viewer to move through the piece, and lends a subtle sense of focus on the vacancy or void that echos the void left by the passing of the trees.
nice tree model too. but i have a personal disagreement on the natural aesthetic of a spirit tree. it might be without damage or circumstantial weathering, because it isnt afflicted by collateral material degredation like some bound to the physical realm. it might look like a tree if it were never affected by such things:
ALMOST CRYSTALLINE in its purity, and structure
yet organically smoothed. remember the quarter power rule all those procedural plant generator use to create thier geometric structure.
but thats just my interpretation to a very original concept, looking foward to more from you, everything i already see is very compelling!

Great Idea.
I've recently had a facination with 3d stuff that looks like x-rays. What your doing reminds me of that type of imagery. You might consider playing around with angle of incidence shaders if you want a similiar look.

Been a while since I post. Every time I want to enter a contest, home and business overwhelm. go figure :-)
yes, some trees look identical, I will fix that. I just wanted to test out the texturing. see if I could get something kinda spirit-like. right now it looks more like the stuff from The Abyss.
I was eager to see what layered transparent trees would look like.

I like this contest topic. right now, it's spawning off a few more ideas and scenes I wanna try.
Just remember, there is still lots of time between now and Deadline to correct it.

Wow. I dunno, I kinda dig that look, the stuff in the abyss was kind of ethereal feeling anyway. Makes me think of the ghost creatures from ff:tsw also. I'd try it with the leaves too and see how that changes the look, bare trees kind of look aquatic anyway. But that's just IMO.
I did kind of like the framing with larger foreground trees also though..or are you going to do the closer one as a 'hero' tree and model it all its own?
At any rate, looking cool, really dig the concept, keep 'em coming :)

Hmm, maybe if you tried rendering the trees with the backfaces being rendered... not sure if thats the look your going for, thought i'd just mention it...
Otherwise they are looking friggin AMAZING... you really have some great lines going, with lots of energy, they almost look alive (in motion).
If you have a computer that could handle it, making the leaves refractive might be very cool... there is so much you could do with this... cool idea, good luck!

right now all I have is 3 trees, one framer, one that heads straight up, and one that switches direction.
I will have leaves on them, I'm not so sure about the red, though. I'll force the colours more to greens and browns.
I also have to put a floor and sky in to ground the scene, right now the trees look pretty alien in that black space.
the render times are clocking in at 40 seconds. no shadows or area lights or anything. unfortunately, I dont have access to backface culling, or I'd make the trees do more interesting things.
I'll produce more variants on those, along with some larger trunk trees and start populating the trees with leaves.

Darn good idea for the picture.
Darn good modelling on those trees.
Darn good texture for the trees.
Overall, it's just darn good, damnit!
One suggestion though: maybe the trees should look thicker/older/taller, logging companies usually like the cut down the big honkin' trees.

I know its been a while since I posted.
I have been working on it, just havent gotten around to actually putting stuff online. I guess that's against the rules.
anyway, I think I've come up with something good for ground and sky:
http://joe.microcosman.com/ForumArt/EnchantedForest/TreesD0.jpg
It's a dry riverbed "there used to be a forest around here" type of terrain.
The sticks are my tree placeholders when I get around to lighting for the trees, as well as give the trees more substance near the base. they wont look like that, they'll look more like the trees in the previous posts. bear in mind, too, there is a ton of leaves on each tree.
it's waay too slow to mess with the full resolution just yet. Here's a good idea how much stuff is in the scene right now:

well, here it is. As far as I have time for it.
http://joe.microcosman.com/ForumArt/EnchantedForest/JoeCosmanJuneEntry.jpg
The trick to this is to do it all in post process.
I rendered out each tree separately and comped it back into the scene with alpha channels.
glow is simply a gaussian blur layer added to the trees with Screen blend mode turned on.
probably 30 different layers in the final composite. I also recropped the picture to make it more interesting.
looks funky Joe, but, i think 1 tree would look better than lots....... i personally think you over did it, it looks like you just discovered a falloff material and got trigger happy.........
try it with one tree, you might have a nice piece of art.......
No, I like it with the number of trees you have. The composition is nice and the trees are very mystical. The only suggestion that I have is to fade out the trees more as they receed into the background. It seems as though you used the same intensity for all the trees and through the middle of the image a lot of them just blend together. A little fade will help bring out the definition of the forground elements and make things a bit more easy to look at.
Excellent work though :buttrock:

I think it would make a great image either with one or many trees. however, since the challenge subject is "Enchanged FOREST" I would go for an image with many trees.
I love the effect, but Kirt is right, it could use a little fading for the trees that are further away.

Since we've got a few more days till the end of the contest, I'll putter around with more stuff on the scene, like ground fog. dead limbs and distance.

I've just discovered falloff material, and Bob's your uncle.

The "spirit" shader ist just AWESOME!
Its such a cool idea - really individual and unique!
I loooove it!!!
My only critic goes to the ground in the last
pciture update... it seems to shiny, to refractive,
but maybe its just my eyes after 8hours of testrendering
:surprised *feeeeeeeels kinda strange*

I have to agree with Faeroon. The ground looks much too glossy and specular. The trees look awesome.
JoeCosman
06-24-2002, 07:16 PM
This problem is amplified in the quick render, because there's no filtering and anti-aliasing going on.
but you're right, though.
JoeCosman
06-28-2002, 05:20 AM
Here's another quick render. The ground fog is almost right. I've also got some deadwood in there.
http://www.3d-geeks.com/JoeCosman/TreesF.Jpg
the trees are aranged so you can move between the bright fog and the moon with little effort. the fog also balances the scene more with the moon.

That looks fantastic man. I can't wait to see the full res version. I think this is definetly a top entry in this challenge.

Here's pretty much what it looks like. I've changed the ground fog a bit, but the high rez is rendering on my 'puter right now.
somehow, I dont think it's as cool as the last 'final' I posted.
http://joe.microcosman.com/ForumArt/EnchantedForest/TreesG.jpg
I'll have the full rez version up tomorrow. 'Cause its the deadline :-)

If you had time I'd say just fade the trees some more - right now they're too obvious to me, not really etherial, for phantoms, they are very hardedged and contrasty - maybe just a personal preference though.
I agree abouthe ground, somplace in between would work, they have the same geomerty (right?), so a combo of both wouldn't be too bad ;) Time of course never helped anyone out.
see you,

That's the goal for today. Sleep does wonders, though. the tree positions are more off than I want, so I'm repositioning them and the camera. I have till midnight :)

Wonderfull!!!
I really like the enhanced fog
Keep 'em comin'!!!!!!
 :buttrock:
Nice and etherial!
Really like the idea, very original indeed...
My only crits at this point would be that the moon seems a lot more overpowering in this image, I'm not sure if it's because the render is smaler (and so it stands out more) - but it's detracting from the trees a little.
Aside from that (minor minor niggle)- it's great!
Especially the ground fog - looks very sweet!
JoeCosman
06-30-2002, 09:05 PM
boy, I sure hope I can make the deadline. My ground render has stayed at 85% for the last hour and a half.
the fog is actually made of particles. 120,000 of em. I might just barely make it.
JoeCosman
06-30-2002, 09:18 PM
Grrrr. I'm gonna have to break the fog into a separate layer for compositing. its taking too long.
(anything over 5 minutes is too long for me) :)
JoeCosman
06-30-2002, 10:30 PM
I ripped the fog out of there for now. its going in on a separate pass. I punched up the light a bit with some penumbral shadows.
the pebble population has increased since last time, too.

okay, I think I finally like this fog.

AJ, I can see that now. I'll work on the moon while this other stuff is rendering.
ZrO-1
06-30-2002, 11:08 PM
I like your tweaks. The trees lok better with the softness added. I like the ground with the extra rocks also.
As far as the render times: *in kung fu voice* Patience Grasshopper.
5 minuets is nothing. I had to render a 3.5 min animation where the characters were beer bottles so I needed raytracing for the reflections and refractions and caustics. It took 480 hours (20 days) to render that whole animation out at HD resolution. Now that is a long render. ;)
JoeCosman
06-30-2002, 11:20 PM
I know, I know. I was just being facetious. Typical render times I'm used to are 8 to 15 min. a frame. Although I do remember a 270 hour render at work for a single frame. that last 3% on the bar takes soooooo long... :)

LOL you're not kidding. :p
JoeCosman

well, it looks like I've hit the limit on Hash's Renderer. :-(
Now I guess it's back to the ol' screengrab composite for final thing again....

Look for the final in the next hour or two.

Hello. that is a cool environment, Glowing trees is a good way to break the typical mindset, weather it is good or bad. I like it a lot, but I want to ask you why you would leave the leaves, green. All that color chagnge, and the leaves are green. And color that a leaf wouldn't typically be, would be better. Might as well be blue, the whole place is in a blue light. That's my comment, good to see something different.
JoeCosman
07-01-2002, 08:05 PM
Too Much blue might have killed the idea.
I wanted a summer green to spice things up.
Something that says Spring and alive, despite the ghosts.

What about, you cold have put a little non-ghose plant, growing in the rocks, treen, and had the trees as ALL ghose. It would tell some sort of a story there. whatever, Im just driving your image from the back seat which is eaisier.
