Hi everyone,

I guess I'm starting a little late but two months is a doable amount of time I hope. After I saw this challenge I spent a good few hours searching the net for reference material. I watched a load of 1950's B-movie trailers and I knew that was the style and era I wanted to go for.

I chatted about it with my wife and she had some pretty bizarre ideas. Anything my wife comes out with sounds like a B-movie plot even if the challenge was CGSociety Challenge: Gritty Realism she would have come out with alien eyes popping out to attack. So, as you can see she is the ideal person to consult for a challenge like this.

After hearing out her ideas for the moonbeams, (cute, girl friendly furry creatures that live on the moon.) and the brickman who emerges from the walls she came up with, you've probably guessed it, eyes popping out of people's heads to attack. Having come full circle I realized this was exactly the right idea. Human's being turned into snails, in typical 50's sci-fi style a meteor lands outside of town leading to an invasion of body-snatching snail mutations! There's a bit more plot to it than so here it goes:

The Plot

An Optician, Mr Grant, is at work is inspecting a teenagers eyes, the teenager complains about soreness. Grant gives him some saline solution and tells him to see his doctor if it gets worse. In the background we hear a radio story about a meteor crash a few miles form town. The teen leaves.

Grant leaves the opticians to get some lunch. On his way he steps over a trail of slime. He goes to the supermarket, in the aisle there is a women desperately filling her basket with lettuce, a mid close up reveals her sore eyes.

Grant goes to the cashier to pay, she too has red sore eyes and when she passes Grant his change he notices slime on her hand. She quickly retracts her arm with as much concern for the sight as Grant has. Grant rubs the slime off on his shirt and leaves looking disgusted.

Grant stands outside his opticians he takes a bite of his sandwich and absentmindedly rubs his eyes. He steps in.

Grant is not long through the door when the teen from earlier returns in panic. His eyes are blisteringly red and they begin to bulge as if they are about to burst. He screams in pain as his eyes protrude on stalks. Grant notices the teens hunched back. His jumper tears to reveal a rapidly developing shell. Grant panics and runs out the back door.

Grant steps on a snail as he bolts for safety. He rounds the corner back onto main-street. There are tiny snails everywhere. He spots the cashier from the supermarket hobbling down the street she too is turning into a monster snail. Grant's eyes begin blurring.

He runs home and bashes into his bathroom, he steadies himself at the sink and looks up into the mirror. His eyes are red and beginning to bulge.... Fade to Black.

Here is a rough thumbnail storyboard for my project

This is a quick sketch of the optician character Mr Grant. I styled him using a few reference pics of famous 50's actors.

Here is another rough sketch of the teenager who complains about his sore eyes. Complete with 50's style sweater and shirt combo. (Something that has strangely come back in fashion here in England, well the cardigan/shirt combo has anyway!)

Another rough sketch but this time the guys eyes are popping out in true snail like fashion.

This is a quick screen shot of the opening shot of the swirling galaxy that will fade into the teenagers eye.

Some advice on getting a better glow off the outer spheres would be good. Also I wanted to render this out in Black and White can that be done in maya or does it need to be post production?

Thanks

This is my first attempt at modelling a human head, the eye texture has been thrown on quickly just to help visualize it. I will take it into mudbox to give it more detail eventually. Any comments and pointers at this stage would be really useful, thanks.

I've just spent an hour adding some more detail here's the result.

Here is a three quarter view, next step is to take it into mudbox, then give him some hair etc.

Good progress mate.

One thing I would say - you should always try to model a neutral, emotionless expression for your default. Your guy is pretty smiley and my guess is, later down the line, you might find yourself fighting that inbuilt smileyness when you want him to look scared or angry or sad...

Just a thought - keep going...!

Thanks for the link.

Duncs: Thanks mate, you're right when I rendered the images above it did cross my mind. I will keep your point in mind with my next model, cheers.

The eye on its own with an area light and I've adjusted the diffuse, specular and refraction to give it a better highlight.
