download GI_Joe... its the best (and free-est) GI "simulator" I've worked with. Combine it with an angled, yellowed point light and you have yourself dusk GI, and add a blue point and you have yourself night GI.
This was a great thread with many good ideas and near the end some slower ones as well, But usefull nonetheless!

Hope this helps. Wouldnt be a bad idea to ressurrect this post with some of the recent tools such as sky and raymarcher.
